I am using HandBrake version 0.9.9.5530 64bit and when I try to rip certain DVD's it does not work at all. I have tried to rip the Haunting of Connecticut, John Wick, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I and a few others and it does not work. I scan the source, it get's to about 65% done the slows completely down, takes about 20 minutes to complete; when I try to start ripping the DVD, it goes for .01% then stops. Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't used Handbrake for DVD ripping in a long time, but I remember it not being able to rip DVDs with copy protection.
Maybe the DVDs you are trying to rip all have copy protection?

MakeMKV will break copy protection and rip any DVD or Bluray disc. Give it a try.

I'll have to do that, thanks for the advice, I'll let you know if it works.

alright, I know the last update didn't work all that well, that's why I'm running the version I am, I'll look into it and see if it works with the settings I've been using or not.

Using MakeMKV is the way to go. It's free and it's a quick step which will give you a hassle free HB transcode.

Here is the link to get the MakeMKV key. It's updated every two months or so.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to thank you for this; I tried virtually every Ripping program, Handbrake with an updated library file, ByteCopy, Xilisoft DVD Ripper - all would crash on not reading the DVD.

MakeMKV not only read the DVD, but scanned different titles, allowing you to select the right version. Also, the event monitor gives you real time displays of issues like SCSI errors for external drives.

So is MakeMKV the best option for ripping DVDs into .mp4 files? I want to get some of my old favourites off DVDs I own but Handbrake doesn't seem to be doing it.

Not really, as MakeMKV rips discs into matroska files. But if you want, you can of course easily remux or convert that into MP4 files with your application of choice.

Handbrake now requires Libdvdcss in order to decrypt DVDs. It did not do this some years ago, in case that is your issue. That being said, MakeMKV is really great, but I usually just still toss DVD's directly into Handbrake because MakeMKV just adds another step for most DVD's.

While it's not free, I've been using Mac DVDRipper Pro for years and have not found anything it couldn't handle. Worth taking a look at it, and it does have a 5 instance free trial to see if it suits your needs. Well worth the cost for my use. It can make exact copies, or reduced file size versions, for archiving.
