Handbrake question

I ripped a DVD to my MBP HD and I opened it up in iTunes to watch it. The movie quality is great but the format is like reverse widescreen so the black bars are on the sides of my screen and not the top and bottom.

So, is there a way to chenge this setting after the fact?

If not then what setting do I need to change in order to get Handbrake to rip films in widesreen format?

I've never experienced that... but there is a pane in Handbrake that shows you a preview of what you're ripping so you can crop if necessary.

But it sounds to me like you are watching a standard shaped movie on a widescreen shaped window or screen- that would do it.
