Thanks i appreciate the help, i will look into a cheaper affordable raid set up possible?

what is a good configuration (probably external) that i can get?

RAID is probably overkill in your case. Just get a backup drive and back up regularly, using Time Machine or otherwise.

Any one use ripit or mac the ripper? I have used handbrake, but arent you supposed to rip the disk to the drive first, then use handbrake?

Also wondering which of these removes the encryption in order to rip the disc?

thanks (avid windblows user, so the mac "way of the fist" is new to me!!)

thanks

Handbrake will do everything. Rips and everything. Takes a LONG time on my iMac, though. 2hours for 1.5hour DVD. :(

man you have it made with a 20 min handbrake rip. Takes my MacBook Aluminum 2 hours to rip a dvd. I dont bother adjusting any settings or fan controls, bad idea?

Are you talking rip and encoding with handbrake? Or just ripping? I don't know much about the macbook, but you can download iStat Pro to see the temps of your memory, hdd, cpu, etc and if they seem high you can always get SMC fan control. I only increase the fan rpms of my mac pro when I do long sessions of video encoding, but otherwise I have leave them low (albeit a tiny bit higher then Apple's original settings).

Thanks!!

sorry it takes you so long, i have had no time to try it yet, but this weekend will do it!!

I'm sure yours won't take nearly as long on your Mac Pro... I'm enviouus... I can't justify getting one just to rip DVDs, though. I usually set my iMac up before sleep and walk away.

even with 3-4 terra byte hdd it will be overkill?

so do you guys just back up the system then?

There's no such thing as a 3-4 TB hard drive. The largest at the moment is 2 TB, and last I checked it's ridiculously expensive. Now, if you want to make one, RAID's your man. 5x1 TB drives will get you a 4-TB array.

Dealing with large amounts of storage, yes, RAID is the way to go.

I mean ripping and encoding a 1.5-2.5hr video. Just takes a while, I definitely don't want to decrease the lifespan of this MacBook (2 weeks old, but its gotta last 2 more years AT LEAST)

Sorry what i meant was 3 to 4 seperate terra byte hdd's not one single 3-4 LOL!!!)

You'll be fine ripping to your MacBook. The only thing that would wear prematurely is probably the hard drive, which is very easy to swap out these days. I rip straight to an external FW800 Drive, so I'm not too concerned.

Also, I'd allow breathing room. Let it ventilate well, might get really hot.

I doubt very much that your hard drive will wear out with 2 years' use, even reasonably heavy use. That said, it's always a good idea to keep an up-to-date backup on hand.

Maybe... But I've had bad luck with MacBook hard drives. :( So glad they're easily replaceable.
