Haven't read every thread on this subject, but enough to become entangled in all the variables in producing an exact replica mp4 or mkv file. End up feeling like a dog chasing its tail the deeper I get in these threads. Much of my frustration, and perhaps that of others, is that we lack the expertise needed to decipher and sort through the multiple options offered in these discussions.

Can anyone please simply provide the Handbrake settings that produce an EXACT replica (exact picture quality, sound quality) of the source dvd, excluding restrictions on file size, what device will be used for playback, etc.

Thank you and happy holidays.

You can use disk utility to make an exact copy of the disk image, and then DVD player to play it. When you rip a disk you get a unmolested copy of the video files. Its only when you try to convert to an itune compatible format that you have to make quality decisions.

Many times you can't make an exact copy. Te commercial DVDs many times hold more data then yu can write to a writable DVD. So you end up compressing to fit.

Most people rip DVD and convert the files to MP4 which are much smaller than the RAW DVD data. If you do it this way you can keep all the image quality but if you write databank the DVD you might have to compress it.

No one will be able to tell you the exact settings, it depends on what is on the DVD
