Are you meaning when trying to get handbrake to open the folder created by MTR. If so in "Browse" just point it to the top level folder and it should find the correct contents, if not direct it to the Video_TS folder.

I wasn't using MTR, just Handbrake. The Video_TS folder on this DVD contains 102 files, most of them movie files, and many of them over a GB in size. How would anyone know which one to choose?

i think you are looking in the wrong place-within handbrake, there will be be a list of files that are of varying length in the source title drop down area. By length I mean how many hours minutes seconds it is. There will also be 1 or in some cases 2 files that are much longer-like 1-2 hrs. If there are two files, try to select the length that you did not use the first time)

Sorry for being so dense, but this is less than obvious to me. I saw a long list of files in the Open... menu of Handbrake. None of them looked obviously like the main film file, to me anyway.

See attached image.

The menu which shows which title should show the duration. That should match with the length of the film or TV episode you are converting. Make sure that all the chapters are selected for that title and then click encode.

If you are using Mac The Ripper you can setup a queue of rips to encode, one after the other so you don't need to switch DVDs all the time.

Oh, ok - you are seeing the .VOB (video object) files. You need to select the source as the whole video_ts folder. I use the pc version of handbrake, so I'm not sure if it is different, but you can choose to select the source by file or by folder. Once Handbrake analyzes the entire video_ts folder, it will give you the pull-down menu of that Cromulent shows above.

I hope that helps?

well, its kinda difficult to believe tho. maybe you can test again and mention the bitrate you have been using?

H.264 might be 2~3x slower, but MPEG4 won't be 1000% faster....

If you combine the slower speed of H.264 and the fact that I have dual 2 GHz Intel processors...that might explain the difference.

I usually use a bitrate of 1500.

I'd definitely recommend a Elgato turbo.264 if you are going to do a lot of encoding on a G4 (especially mostly for iPod/iPhone sized content). Or just mpeg4 (XviD) video with AAC audio for much shorter encode times.

Well, now Handbrake does not work for me, at all. The previous version (0.91) won't allow me to use the "Open Source" menu. I just get a system beep. The newest version (0.92) quits immediately on launch. I've tried replacing the application and trashing the preferences file, but no joy.

I'm using handbrake right now and because it is getting late I wanna leave this on and go to sleep? I set my energy saver to go to sleep at 4 am and the eta is 1 hour and 20 minutes. So, if I go to sleep and leave this on, once the screen goes dark will it still be on?

Thanks,
ChrisN

If you're just setting the monitor to sleep, the computer will still be working. If you're setting the computer to sleep, as long as HB is done before it's finished, you'll be fine.

Are you using Leopard? You must have Leopard for 0.92.

For Tiger users encountering the "upgrade problem," here is the solution:

When you launch Handbrake 0.91, you'll be prompted with an upgrade dialog box presenting you with the (cryptic) choices "go get it" or "discard." You need to click "discard." Now you need to open Preferences, and deselect "check for updates," quit Handbrake and relaunch. You won't see the upgrade dialog box, and Handbrake will work.

I really must say, this made me mad for a few days. But I am known to be short tempered with my mini:)

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I just ripped my first DVD to iPod Touch/iPhone and it took over 1 hour and is 900mb-ish.

Is this normal speeds? I set out to rip the same DVD for "Normal" mode and it selected: "2-passs encoding" with "turbo first pass" selected.
so Part 1 took 1 hour and ended up as 200mb (20 min about) and then Part 2 began and would take another 1 hour. 2 hours seems pretty long to rip the movie, could somebody please post approx time it should take a ~2 hour movie and maybe a screenshot of their settings.

Thanks.

Oh, and my specs are:
stock 20" 2.66ghz iMac core 2 duo, 2gb ram, etc...
