I'm brand new at trying to rip dvd's to watch on my iPad. My question is: Do you have to have VLC along with Handbrake to rip dvd's or can you use Handbrake alone? Thank you in advance!

You have to have VLC installed to use Handbrake.

I would suggest though that if you have ALOT of dvd's to rip that you look at a seperate ripper to do the ripping part of the process and let Handbrake handle just the encoding.

You see if you use HB as an All-In-One solution the disc is tied up for as long as it takes to encode. But the simple task of ripping is much much quicker (~15-30min.) with a seperate ripping software. For example, I use either Rip It, Mac the Ripper, or Fairmount to rip a batch of dvd's and then throw them all in the queue in Handbrake and let them run all night long.

You can even set up Rip It to automatically start ripping as soon as you insert dvd and then when it's done it will eject it. So I just keep a lookout for when the disc is ejected and throw in another one and before you know it you have a dozen or so dvd's ready to be put in Handbrake and let her run.
