I think you’re right, a VESA mount makes more sense for some folks. Though overkill for those that don’t need a reference-type monitor, there are plenty of scientific, engineering, finance and others like music producers who can benefit from a lot of screen real estate. There are few large Retina-class displays available.

Yeah, I know of only two: the 32" 6k XDR (220 ppi), and the 32" 8k Dell (275 ppi). I'd be interested to hear if there are others.

Come to think of it, for scientists/coders/financial types, I wonder if the Dell 8k might be a better choice, since it's about half the price ($3229 on NewEgg) of the XDR, and might be sharper. There is, of course, the question of whether Catalina can properly scale 8k (so the menus aren't too small), and whether the new Macs can properly drive it. Yeah, I suspect the stand was designed more for use by creative pros than other types of pros (e.g., scientists/coders/financial types who would like a very large retina monitor for large calculations/viewing several documents simultaneously/coding/spreadsheet work). It's probably more for that type of work that you might more often find users who want the monitor to be lower.

It could be a new niche market that wasn't worth the cost for people who work in the field of programming and don't be surprised if it sold far worse than thunderbolt display market. It's a missed opportunity that Apple illogically refuse to serve that segment of the target market with thinner 27” model without the need for XDR feature.

Yeah the Dell 8K, it uses 2 DisplayPort connections, I don’t see why the Mac Pro couldn’t drive it but I really don’t know. There are some guys here who know a lot about displays and how they connect, maybe one of them will chime in 🤞 @joevt ??

re: scaling, once you drop out of native resolution I’m not sure it would look as sharp as the XDR’s 6K but I’d think it would be close. At 8K, UI elements would be rather small though so I think you’d have to run it scaled.

Yeah, it’s at this point where they don’t even TRY to offer an option that you know it’s just a troll. :) You’re not going to be able to get them to see your point because they’d simply rather not.

Another great way to tell that they are trolls is that they post basically the same baseless, unsupported comments (e.g. “they’d sell many more 27” monitors”) over and over, as replies to most anything. Fortunately, the more they do it, the easier for others reading the thread to see that is what they are.
