The physical-click Home button is what baffles me. I wonder if they are recycling these components from older devices? I'd be surprised, since this clickable button does tend to wear out. The haptic Home button was a smart upgrade, so it's confusing why Apple didn't standardize on that. Maybe the haptic feedback is not as effective on a tablet vs a phone?

I'm still waiting for my mini 5 (min 4 now). I don't believe the minis have the haptic engine required for virtual clicking. Apple buys very good buttons. I can't recall ever having one fail.

So glad there's a mini 5 out there, but there's just one problem. My mini 4 still runs great!
But when my 4 has died and gone to recycle heaven a mini 5 will be had. Why no 128Gb edition though?

Flash RAM is so dirt cheap now that it prolly didn't pay to have to stock an intermediate size.

My mini 5 comes in a few days. I still wish I could get a silicone case for it like for my mini 4 but doesn’t look like any options available yet.

I've seen some mini 5 cases on Amazon.

I'm buying the iPad Mini for sure! But IMHO the 64GB base model is a travesty. Someone at Apple who decided this was acceptable should be buried alive in Steve Jobs' grave.

No. It has enough for OS upgrades (no more 16 Gig devices) but saves cash for people who don't intend to store much on the device.

I just got the ESR Rebound Slim Smart Case from Amazon for my mini 5. It's ok, but not as nice as the Apple one. I ordered two different cases and the other one comes tomorrow so we'll see if I can find something as good as the silicone mini 4 case.

Yeah I ordered one of the cheap ones just to have something to put it in temporarily. Just really like the Apple silicone case and Smart Cover combo on my mini 4 and wish I could duplicate it.

Sometimes we just have to move on. :)

Have you thought about just using the same case for the 5? You'd lose the mic, but that's it I think.

Just wanted to add to the list of those who love the iPad Mini. I will always have a soft spot for it. At some point, it was my absolutely favorite Apple device, bar none.

i'm buying an iPad air in the summer or fall. It has pencil support, and as someone who wants to edit documents on it, it's a perfect size and a good price. I just need to find the right software so that I can edit documents like I would with a piece of paper and a pencil. (I want to cross things out and write in new words in red, then transfer it over to my iMac so I can have that up on screen while I edit on the other).

Meh, incremental updates. I sold my iPad this week, found since getting an iPhone X and having a Mac boom pro, there has been little need for an iPad.

It’s not incremental for those of us coming from a Mini 2/3. I got my 5 today and it’s as fast browsing the web as a good desktop pc. Everything just works instantly. Massive upgrade over my old 2. The 4 was indeed an incremental upgrade so I never bothered to upgrade but the 5 is a huge leap in speed.

I personally don’t care about thin bezels or pencils. I just need something kindle-sized for one handed reading or watching movies on an airplane tray table. The mini is great as is; it just needed a modern processor and this one will last me another 5 years I suspect.

When the 2019 iPad Air 10.5" was announced, I thought it was a decent product, but really just a 10.5" iPad Pro Lite. Then I checked the refurb store and discovered Apple was selling the 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" for even less money, so I bought the iPad Pro instead.

The iPad Pro has a slightly slower SoC (A10X), but it has a better screen with ProMotion for 120 Hz and lower latency, quad speakers, higher resolution rear camera with larger aperture + Focus Pixels + optical image stabilization + 4K recording, rear flash (and flashlight), and 4 GB RAM.

In Canada, the best deal on the 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" is Apple's refurb store, but in the US, there are some excellent deals at retails stores. Also, for those looking for Face ID and screaming fast SoC, the 2018 11" has also gone on sale in the US at some retailers.

I just got a pair of mini 5s for my wife and I. Does anyone know why Apple discontinued the silicone rear case for the mini 4? I never use the microphone and this backing was really nice on my mini 4.

Someone posted on another thread that their silicone Mini 4 case fits, although the camera hole will need to be cut out a bit. Like you, I don’t use the mic. I’ve ordered a silicone back cover off eBay. If you still have your Mini 4, see if the silicone cover fits well enough to use it.

Hopefully some other people will post about the Mini 4 silicone back cover on the Mini 5. I would have picked up a Mini 5 today and tested the silicone back cover if they’d had the model that I wanted, but they didn’t and I wasn’t going to pay an extra $150 for storage that I won’t use.

Based on the picture one guy posted with the Mini 4 silicone back cover on his Mini 5, I’ve ordered one from eBay and I’ll just use a Dremel or something to reshape the camera hole if need be. I don’t care of the hole alignment isn’t perfect as long as the buttons work. I like the silicone back cover and Smart Cover, too.

Every home physical home button has eventually failed on my previous ipads.

The nice thing is that since iOS 12 introduced the swipe up to go home gesture, you hardly have to push the home button anymore. Maybe to wake the device up, and you can do that with the sleep/wake button or smart cover.

I rarely click the button on my iPad anymore and just use the gestures.

I am really tempted by the iPad Air 3. I do actually love the sharper edges of the newest iPad Pros, but I prefer TouchID and the presence of a headphone jack socket is a huge, huge factor for me too. I like that it has a 256GB option too. And I like a bit of a bezel to hold onto. And a reasonable(ish) price point.

I have always liked the idea of the iPad mini more than the reaistic prospect of buying one, but that’s just down to my personal use-scenarios... also seems nice, and I’m glad it exists.

Yuck it doesn’t even have Face ID my iPad mini 3 has finally died weighing the options of fixing it or just get the iPad Pro 3rd generation

No USB-C or wireless charging, no deal. Probably no iPads at all in my future once my iPad mini 2 stops receiving security updates. It's wonderful and I love it, but I use it so rarely that a Fire tablet would be adequate (and is 1/10 the price).

The Fire's performance is worse but adequate. The only serious problem with the Fire I have is that the battery life in sleep mode is awful (about 3 days of standby on a charge). It's extremely annoying and I've tried a lot of things to fix it, but I can work around it by just powering down when I'm not using it.
