Why do people think that quoting the price in foreign currency strengthens their argument?

Yes, the Magic Keyboard's price is high compared to less functional options, but it still costs $299 USD.

But if you really want to go whole hog, why not quote the price in Japanese Yen: OMG it costs 31,800!!!!!!!!
It's not just a currency conversion - they also cost more in countries outside the US. For example the AUD 553 example above is equal to USD 332 today.

This iPad is being touted by some reviews as a laptop replacement. Unfortunately it still only runs mobile versions of popular programs, if a mobile version exists at all. Until it can run full programs like Capture One, it won’t be a complete laptop replacement for everyone.
Nothing in the world will ever be ”for everyone”.

Why do you say that? iPad outsells Mac and even PCs by a large margin. This is like the iPhone and iPod. Apple would rather fully support iPad over Mac no matter what it takes, even if it risks cannibalization.

Actually Now I see it is right. Apple is still investing in the Mac - but the refresh cycles for a desktop/laptop is longer than for an iPhone or iPad. They want you to buy both. In fact that is how I am set up. I have a Mac on my home office desk that is the central computing platform. I use the iPad Pro as my mobile computing device. And I have an Iphone and two Apple TVs.

Except for the fact Apple itself is portraying it a replacement for everyone...

No they arent' Its the car versus truck dichotomy. For some people - it could be a replacement. But not for all.

Because there is a world outside of the US? Because there are members here from other countries? Just some ideas :)

Apple last week introduced new 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, which are set to arrive in the hands of customers starting this week. Apple introduced a nifty new Magic Keyboard with trackpad alongside the new iPad Pro models that's coming in May, but it also debuted a new Smart Keyboard Folio, which is available now.

We picked up the Smart Keyboard Folio for the designed for the 2020 iPad Pro models and compared it to the Smart Keyboard Folio that was released alongside the 2018 iPad Pro models to see if there are any notable differences.

Design wise, the two keyboard are close to identical, but the new model is slightly darker in color, though it's still a dark gray shade. The material on the outside feels the same, but there is one major exterior difference - an Apple logo. The new Smart Keyboard Folio is outfitted with an Apple logo, which the original did not have.

There's also a square-shaped camera cutout instead of the vertical camera cutout of the prior model, which allows it to accommodate the new square-shaped camera bump on the new iPad Pro models.

Apple's 2020 iPad Pro models feature a dual-lens camera setup with wide-angle and ultra wide-angle lenses along with a new LiDAR Scanner that's designed to scan the area around you for all-new augmented reality experiences.

When it comes to the keyboard and the typing experience, there's no change. The keys are shallow with little travel and have a fabric-like texture that's meant to be waterproof and spill proof. It's not the greatest typing experience, but it's passable.

The new Smart Keyboard Folio replaces the prior model and it is designed to work with both 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro models. On 2018 iPad Pro models, the camera cutout will be larger than necessary, but it fits both. Apple is no longer selling the version with the vertical camera cutout.

Apple in May will release the new Magic Keyboard, which is equipped with scissor switch keys with 1mm of travel and backlighting, making the new keyboard more similar to a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro keyboard.

The Smart Keyboard Folio is priced starting at $179 for the 11-inch version and $199 for the 12.9-inch version, which is a good deal cheaper than the $299/$349 asking prices for the new Magic Keyboard options.

The improved camera leaves me completely cold. Short of using it with a tripod (probably for making videos), who in the world does photography with an iPad? It would be as awkward as taking a picture with a cafeteria tray. Yes, it would give you God's own view finder, but the resulting picture would be no better than what I already can get from my iPhone.

Keyboard? Personally I have next to no use for one. Certainly not enough to justify the expense.

There's only one feature that would inspire me to replace the iPad Pro I already own. At the moment, the iPad remains Apple's single mobile product for which wireless charging is unavailable. Dark Ages technology, yuck. Time was, when the Smart Connector dots were placed on the side, you could buy a Logitech charging station which allowed you to charge wirelessly in landscape mode. It was a bit pricey, but extremely handy. Then Apple moved the Smart Connector to the bottom rear. At first Logitech promised us a new charging solution but they never took the finger out and actually marketed such a thing and nobody else has stepped up. Apple itself seems quite content to leave us in the lurch

I don't see why somebody couldn't invent a charging station for the new setup, probably involving dropping your iPad into a well deep enough to provide secure support in portrait mode. Or maybe build an iPad with a glass area on the back with a Q1 receiving coil behind it? But nobody (Apple, Logitech, or anybody else) seems to give enough of a hoot about the welfare of the end user to come up with a solution, even though there's plenty of money just begging to be made for the first company to come up with a solution. Sorry, Apple, but I'm not shelling out another dime for an iPad until you bring this device out of the Dark Ages. I WANT FREEDOM FROM THAT DAMN WIRE!

Because if you look up what the actual currency conversion should be, it should be closer to $425, and not $450. Many foreign markets are charged even more because Apple's currency conversion essentially amounts to an additional tax.

“The iPad is not trying to replace existing laptops, it is trying to be a new kind of laptop. The trouble is it has taken ten years to get here. If only Apple would pick up the pace a little.”

Name one person , who is not a professional Photographer that uses Capture One?! I doubt few if any would even be able to tell you what Lightroom is, let alone Capture One. Truth is most of the world does not care and has no need for those professional applications!
An iPad also doesn’t have a 30” 6K Display or options for 1.5 Tb of Ram, twin Vega64 duo’s or a 20 core processors in case you didn’t realize! These are features professionals in specific industries need and use.

The vast majority of users out there in the general public - more than 90% of Apple’s market could not tell you what a Video Card actually does, what a 6K Display even means, and they would not know what to do with a 20 core processor, much less have any actual need for it, for those users an iPad is more than adequate.

Apple does not need to make one device that suits every possible application, that is why they still make Pro Laptops and Desktop Machines for professionals like you.

And by the way READ those reviews, I have, and NONE say an iPad is a replacement for a professional workstation or production level editing rig! At best they are an alternative for a MacBook Air or perhaps an entry level iMac for people on the go.

LOL ‘Dark Ages Technology?!!! What the Dark Ages from 2015?!

Seriously you need to get a grip on reality! Apple makes a device that anyone can use thinner and lighter than a paper magazine that contains more computing and processing power than the entirety of computers on Earth could generate 60 years ago! And those computers took up entire rooms and needed entire teams of engineers and programmers just to operate it! Not to mention it’s wireless and radio capabilities allow it to connect to devices and networks almost anywhere on the entire planet instantly. Ask your parents what it took (and how much it cost) to make an international phone call 40 years ago!

So chill out and stop whining because god forbid you have to plug your device it in to a charger once a day or so.

Agree - This is where the majority of my family's attention is. They use iOS devices fo 85% of their daily needs. with the addition to the iPad Pro with a keyboard mouse and a 4k tv with built-in airplay – I'm sure they will now need our dusty old family iMac even less. I have a MacBook Pro for work and an iPad Pro for everything else. What we could use is a nice updated display with some storage that everyone could plug into and share.

I saw a comparison one day, I believe it was in Science magazine, which showed a 2018 MacBook Pro has more processing power than all of the computer systems used in the Apollo 11 spacecrafts to land man on the Moon.

Why would someone in Canada or Japan discuss the price in USD?

id wait for trackpad
yet better 3rd party may be better - and cheaper in price and quality?
yet who am i to say - i just have a regular ipad from last year
still sticking to my 2 win 10 lappies - they just work - got good deals on them

I have the previous model of the keyboard and the iPad. When mounted in either slot the new. iPad sits at a different angle compared to the previous version. Just sharing another difference.

If 32 bucks is going to make or break you, then clearly the superior engineering of the Magic Keyboard is out of your price range.

I’m probably taking the bait here, but you realize he is in Canada... The currency he listed is not foreign to him but is in fact what he uses on a day to day. If he were in Japan, I’d expect the price to be mentioned in yen.

I wonder if the Corona Virus Pandemic was not around, would the price of the keyboard still be this much? I feel as if they are doing this to make up for the losses in profits. You can buy another iPad 32GB for that price. Lol

Typical American attitude. They are quoting the price it costs in their own country, why would they care how much it costs in yours?

Australian Government imposes an import tax on us and enforces Apple to provide a two year warranty which I suspect Apple increase their product prices to us to cover their expense of the additional one year warranty service Australians (and others that live here) receive. I quoted the price so that Americans can realise how lucky they are living where they do. At current exchange rate the price for a 12.9 iPad Pro Magic Keyboard would be approximately AUD420 [USD300] but for myself (at a discounted price) is AUD553 [USD 395] which is due to Australia's high taxation and regulation legislation applied by our Government.

any info on how to reinstate the auto brightness for the magic keyboard? I have adjusted it to a suitable brightness in settings. I'm now unable to set it back to auto so it adjusts itself.

Anyone know any info on how to set it back to auto brightness?
