I wish it had the bolder colors from the new iMac. Not a fan of these muted pastels; the purple and blue are dreary and sad.
I couldn't agree more. The muted pastels and bland versions of other colors need to go. Starlight is just a bland version of silver/gold, the Apple Watch's Midnight is just a bland version of black, etc. I get that Apple needs to introduce new colors, but it feels like they're scraping the bottom of the barrel just for the sake of having something different. It's been years since the iPhone 5C, bring back those colors, along with actual black and white models. I would love a white MacBook or a solid black Apple Watch.

Switched from Air 4 to Air 5. FaceTimed a bit today, the Center Stage alone was worth the $200 out of pocket and I'll probably use this device for 2 years. Better processor and faster transfer times are just icing on the cake. It's a great tablet.
I bought the new iPad and I love it, but centre stage is just a software gimmick, hardly worth anything at all, let alone $200. If they wish they could give it to older iPads too, as it doesn’t rely on any hardware.

This review is really more of a comparison of the new iPad Air vs. iPad Pro. I think the features of the new iPad Air should have been reviewed on their own IMO.
The review seemed to address the $50 difference between Air 256 with Pro base version, assuming only few people will interest into 64gb Air.

Nice to see the iPad Air get an M1 chip. Pricing looks pretty good. Wish it had 128GB RAM included in the base model though.
Pricing is pretty weird if 64GB isn't enough though because then suddenly you can get a 128GB iPad Pro for around the same price as a 265GB iPad Air.

For $50 more you get Face ID, promotion, quad speakers and a better camera with flash going with the 128 GB Pro 11 inch over the 256 GB Air
In Europe you can get a 128GB iPad Pro for even cheaper than the new 265GB iPad air. Which makes it even more awkward if you need more than 64GB.

The entry level price is good, but 64GB isn’t enough for me, I need 128GB or more. The Price jump to the 256GB model puts it in line with the 128GB Pro. The feature bump to the pro for just a little bit more money is really good value, so I started of looking at the Air, then bought the Pro

Coming from the iPad Gen 6 model, this was a huge update for me and I love it. Since last year, I avoided using my iPad 6, it was chunky and slow. Not unusable, but I would reach for my iPhone (I had the 8 Plus when I bought it, then moved from an 11 Pro to 13 Pro Max) or head to my desk and use my Mac mini. Found myself wanting to do more: such as spreadsheets, documents, photos and small video editing. My iPad didn’t like it, but it is about 4 years old on an A10 chip.

Looked at the new Pro several times, but every time I’d price it out it would make a MacBook Pro 13-inch look like a better option. The Air was it, but I didn’t want to get it at the time since an update seems to loom around when I’m looking to buy one. This Air is perfect, it’s definitely a great buy for those who still rely on a Mac for heavy lifting and need a strong compliment for lighter travel.

Still not sure what Mac I’ll get in the next couple of years, but my Mac mini i7 will hold out until the M2. Don’t know if it’ll be another mini, iMac or MacBook Pro 13-inch, but I’m sure it’ll be clearer by 2023 for me.

It’s same old iPad Air with new colour and a chip that no one needs next….
This summarizes a lot of ridiculousness found on this site. This is what spoiled know-nothings are like. Nothing is ever good enough, everything is crap and all of it overpriced. They're pissy because everything introduced is not revolutionarily different than before. They want it all and at a bargain price.

It's meant to project a superior mindset and they clearly see what everyone doesn't, but it simply reveals the mindset of a whiny brat with an attitude.

Then they will turn around and quietly buy the very stuff they're pissing all over.

Cannot wait to see how many people bagging on the Studio Display end up with a Studio Display after the bugs are ironed out? I won’t. Cannot afford it and I already have a Dell P2415Q and BenQ SW271 that do quite well for me along with a 2019 iMac almost maxed out, so I got a 5K 500-nit P3 display, but for others this might be a great display, despite the cost. There seems to be an overwhelming obsession with high Hertz rate displays that pervades this website that speaks to FOMO, or too many PCMR gamers frequenting these forums. Either way, I agree with your post 100%

If I were buying an iPad right now I would be leaning toward the 9th GEN 10.2, maybe with 256GB, but 64GB would suit me fine. I presently have an iPad Pro 10.5 and I’m nowhere near using up its 64GB capacity. Also, sue me, but I happen to like the home button.

Having said that the new M1 iPad Air with 64GB would be something to seriously consider, particularly given it would cost less than what I paid for my 10.5 Pro when new. M1 performance at a bargain price—thats a good deal.

For my tablet needs I cannot see myself popping for an iPad Pro when the lower tiered models offer everything I need for less money.

Maybe one day the iPad ad will say “This is a computer!”. That would be funny. OTOH I’m perfectly happy with iPadOS, for what I use my iPad for, consumption.

This starting at 64 gb in 2022 is so incredibly lame.
In other people’s opinion, spending additional money on 256 gb, or on FaceId or ProMotion would be incredibly lame, or simply out of financial reach.

64 gb seems to be plenty for the millions of people that will buy and get great use out of this device for years to come.

It’s nice there are options for all consumers, with varying needs and budgets. Not everyone can afford a tricked out iPad Pro. I appreciate those options.

The comments permeating throughout the forum about “it’s only another $50 to get iPad Pro blah blah” to me demonstrate a lack of understanding that not everyone is in the same (financial or otherwise) situation as others may be in. Yes $50 may be a lot of money to some people. Me included.

A fond memory I have of my Dad (then in his early 80s) is seeing him navigate the iPad I gave him after he had learned how to browse the net, look up his medications, visit the newspaper and sports sites he liked and play solitaire, even as he proclaimed, “I don’t know anything about using a computer.” My reply was, “You seem to be doing allright with the one in your hand.” ?

This new iPad Air just shows apple having no idea how to differentiate their iPad lineup anymore. M1 iPad Air is just extra overkill hardware wise, as iPadOS is just as bad as it is. iPadOS is getting closer and closer to macOS without being macOS, but still the strongest iPad inhibitor.

I don’t blame them for having nothing to cover because there’s nothing much to cover when this new iPad Air is practically an internal upgrade. If this iPad Air somehow has M1 Pro in it with 16GB RAM in it we might have something more to discuss.

I rest my case. ?

Im assuming the new Air has 8GB of RAM now? If so this is even more of a reason for the average consumer to get it over the pro. But I do agree if you need more storage and want longevity the Pro is still the way to go. Face ID is WAY more convenient.

Rumor has it that Apple is working on some kind of “ resizable window” mode for iPad OS. Similar to they way you can resize a quick note and move it around right now. And it will require an M1 and that 8GB of RAM. So it seems like Apple is kind of prepping anyone with a 1-2 year old iPad come fall to be able to use this feature. And if done right its gonna spur massive sales of M1 devices.

So lame. I definitely need more space… /s

Yup. That’s exactly what Apple was hoping was going to happen (and why there is no 128GB model).
