Interesting thread.

I have a question. I am about to buy a new smart TV and an ATV4. I already have a TimeCapsule which has a network media drive attached and lots of movie files.

Can I use AT4 Plex app to access my media on the network drive that is plugged into Time Capsule?

I’m not sure, I’ve a Synology NAS with a built in Plex app, but the NAS wasn’t fast enough, so I use my mac mini to run the plex app and the NAS is simply storing the files.

What brand is your Network media drive ??? specs etc.

Thank you for your quick reply ianrip.

My drive is a Western Digital 4TB MyBook (Model WDBFJK0040HBK-JESN), and it's plugged directly into my Time Capsule. Will that likely work?

I don't think it'll work, you'll need to install the Plex Server app/program, and I don't think you can install anything onto your MyBook. not sure if you can side load it etc. maybe someone else knows.
FYI
I have an older media drive and will try it later, I'm at work just now. i'll let you know in a PM

Brilliant thanks! That's really kind of you :p

I wonder if Infuse is the way to go instead.

Yes and no. Plex requires running a (free) server. They provide builds for OSX, Windows, Linux... But you will have to leave a computer on to run that server.
Otherwise try Infuse, I think it can do what you want.

Whatever drives or directories your Plex Media Server sees, your ATV4 Plex client will access.

Thanks. I'll try it out when my new set up arrives next week!

Ok good to know. Since I don't really want to run a server all the time for now, I think Infuse is the way to go. I'll give it a go and will report back! Thanks both of you :)

If the drive is accessible on your network, Plex should be able to use it.

EDIT: looks like this has already been answered. Carry on.
