There IsThisRigCaveat here: no way to write a space. writing area hearily limited from text tield size. For apps like iMessage, it's going to be Tricky to write stuf incide that tiry text bear.

You can enter a space with an upstroke. What I can’t figure out is how to a carriage return.

You don’t need to write in the text field, just start your stroke there and then you can write pretty much anywhere in any size.

Yes but they need to update their Notes app so we can get a decent pdf export from it. When the page goes on for too long, the pdf export tries to fix the size so the resolution goes down. If you have a note which goes on 50 pages and you export that to pdf, it's unreadable.
That's a pretty weird bug/feature.

Another quick follow up.
When apps are in slide over, the language bar by default will cover the text field (for messaging apps they are at the bottom), making the entire scribble kinda pointless.
Given this is beta 1, I am hoping for better version of that coming in. For now, its more like a novelty feature than anything that I can rely on.

I’ve never much liked typing and if this is as good as it looks could be a game changer for a lot of people being able to hand write notes etc , into text fields ! Heck what would I use the key board for now 😃

True. Apple Pencil has been completely useless all these years. Nobody has found any use for them at all.

For you maybe but others have. My wife uses her daily to take notes, markup PDF and other things. She is in sales and she walks lots of warehouses taking notes and the Pencil has been a wonderful addition to what she does. Just because you can't make use of something does not make it useless.

I think it would be helpful they add a button on the pencil to invoke the keyboard. Press the button, type with the keyboard, press button, keyboard gone.

Yeah, but nah. Buttons break. It’d be better as a gesture or tap somewhere on the pencil surface, maybe. Haha, or “squeeze it”. Squishy pencil! Squish squish!

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic.

I wonder whether handwriting created prior to iPadOS 14 (in notes app) can be copied to plain text once you update to iPadOS 14?

good video
makes me consider playing with my un used ipad sitting around
hope it works with just a finger

Does it work only using separate block letters, the way most Americans write like in the video, or can it also work using rapid cursive writing, European style?

How do I enable this? It does not work for me. All I can do is select handwritten text, but that's it. No option to transform it into actual text or anything, I can't use the Apple Pencil as shown in the demo for typing URLs in Safari, etc.

This is really awesome stuff! But Staffpad’s implementation of this technology blew me away even more and I love working with that software.

Apple's upcoming iPadOS 14 update has many of the same features that are available in iOS 14, but there are a handful of functions that are designed specifically for the larger display and the Apple Pencil, such as Scribble.

Scribble is one of the most notable new features in iPadOS 14, and we checked it out in our latest YouTube video. With Scribble, you can use an Apple Pencil to write in any text field on the iPad, with the written text then converted to typed text.

The functionality lets you use the Apple Pencil throughout the operating system without having to swap over to a keyboard when you need to compose an email, write a Calendar event, visit a URL, send an iMessage, or conduct a search. You can, for example, go to Safari and write in MacRumors.com, and it'll convert to the proper URL so you can get to the site.

Scribble is decent at recognizing all kinds of handwriting, even when it's messy, but it does not work well with cursive. It interprets capitals and proper spacing, so once you get the hang of handwriting in text fields, it's a fairly seamless experience.

If you make a mistake when you're writing something, you can just scribble it out with the Apple Pencil and it deletes, which is a handy feature. If you need to select text, you can just circle it.

Scribble works in any text field as mentioned, but it's also been built into the Notes app. Just tap on the toolbar and select the pen that has the little "A" on it. This tool will convert all your handwritten text in notes to typed text.

To go along with Scribble, there are a few other useful tools. Smart Selection lets you select all of your handwritten text as if it was typed text, and if you copy it and paste it into an app that doesn't support handwriting, it will be converted into typed text.

You can also select handwritten text and paste it into other notes, or make changes to the style and the color of the written text. Handwritten phone numbers, links, addresses, and more also turn into clickable links like they do when typed. So if you write out a phone number, you can tap it to call it because the iPad is able to detect the numbers and convert them on the fly.

With a Shape Recognition tool, if you clumsily draw a standard shape like a circle or a star, iPadOS 14 will recognize the shape you're trying to make and convert it into a perfect version, which is useful for note taking and diagrams.

With iPadOS 14, the iPad can be used almost entirely with touch and tools, and there's little need to type. If you're someone who prefers writing by hand, iPadOS 14 introduces tools that enhance the experience.

What do you think of Scribble and the other features in iPadOS 14? Let us know in the comments, and for more on iPadOS 14, make sure to check out our roundup.

How bad is the cursive recognition? That‘s my go-to.

So they resurrected old code from the Newton? ;)

hells yea I noticed that too. There is a reason why Michael Tchao is back at Apple ;)

Nothing Apple does is ever really dead. Put on the shelf to be revisited later or changed up.

The Navigator concept became the Newton due to the craze of PDA’s and the expense and minimal appea of a smartphone in its day (Ericsson R320 incl.). It re-evolved in a segment with the iPhone 4S with Siri and then returned yet evolved in the iPad Pro!

Pippin ... lol that became games on iOS and iPadOS & AppleTV and soon on MacOS. Nobody is left out.

Cool, I've been doing it for ages in my surface Pro, but this looks good cool and probably a more seamless integration.

Also, since at least 2012 with Galaxy Note 10.1/Galaxy Note II and it worked great unlike the Apple Newton.
