Good to know - but this was always available on the old remote as well.

Always boggled my mind that people didn't know all the things the old remote could do. You could skip/forward back 10s and also a touch (without a click) would allow you move around just like the arrows on this new remote as well. I always thought the old remote got way too much hate.

That said - this design looks good. I'll be picking up one of the new ATVs... and if I like the remote I'll probably replace all of my remotes (have ATV 4ks on 3 other TVs).
Functionally, I loved the old Siri Remote, too (when it worked — I seemed to have accuracy issues with finger positioning on the trackpad and it would do weird stuff which happened with multiple remotes). I just think the design was far from practical for its setting; it was annoyingly sensitive. I think you'll find much much improvement with the new one. I know that I hadn't expected to like it as much as I do.

so many complaints here about the old Siri remote, everyone hailing the new one, and now you need support docs and video tutorials on how to use it, eg fast forwarding a video ... this is just hilarious to watch.
I do have 2 ATV 4k in the house, original Siri Remote and neither my wife nor I lose it or are complaining about its functionality, but everyone is different ...

Not me, I figured it out in about a minute while watching a movie. I suspect others with a modicum of curiosity will have a similar experience.

Now if only this thing could also in some magic way double as remote for my tv… like navigating and all that.

We still depend on that clunky and slow Logitech harmony in stead.

Just got mine today...just the remote. It's MILES better than that touch-pad-only thing that originally came with the AppleTV 4K. I had resorted to using my phone with it's remote-app. This is MUCH better. Thicker too. Everything falls right under the thumb.

Now if we could get all the apps to behave the same.

Can this be used as a truly universal remote?
TV - is my monitor
Receiver - is my audio source.

All can be controled by the new remote so I can ditch my Logitech Remote?

New ATV remote is certainly an improvement on the old one but it's far from perfect. Apple still can't let go of their minimalistic design fetish when it comes to the remote. It's an entirely wrong approach. A remote must above all be simple to operate. That should trump all other considerations. When a basic function requires a combination of several gestures/clicks that's a design fail. It inevitably introduces possibilities for errors that absolutely don't need to be there. That's particularly true when it comes to older people with reduced coordination. Another side of the same issue is that you have to read the manual or watch how to videos to figure out how to perform many of the basic functions. Older people also aren't going to do that. Many (most?) regular users who are not geeks like Macrumors visitors won't either.
Apple should have made the remote even bigger with even more buttons. In particular basic operations such as home screen or fast forward should have had their own dedicated buttons.

Justification is that noone would want to use their remote battery to constantly ping Find My. I've owned an Apple TV 4K for 3 years and I think I charged the remote twice.
Not “no one”. I, for one, would be quite happy if they’d added Find My functionality at the cost of needing to recharge the remote more frequently.

I'll buy one the moment I see it on a shelf peg.

Just wish it didn't use a rechargeable Li-Poly battery and had something more standard.

I use PS3s as my primary media player largely thanks to their fantastic, big, discrete buttons for everything official remote.

Have you looked into HDMI-CEC? It has many brand names. Activate it on all your devices and away you go. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205225

My reciever is controlled by my ATV/Siri remote: wake up, input select, volume, power down.

If you could charge it once a year instead of once every 1.5 years, but could precisely find it if lost, would you take that tradeoff?

To be fair, I have no idea what the battery drain would actually be :)

Does this thing have backlit buttons? If not, epic fail.
You don't need it. The old and new Siri remotes have so few buttons that you can easily operate them without looking. That is one reason why I always liked the old one (I often watch on my projector in a darkened room), and the new one improves on the few flaws it had.

The only function of the old one that I haven't found a way to replicate yet is the "fast scrolling" that some apps support when you swipe along the left or right edge of the old remote (typically a column of the letters A-Z appears on the screen then).

Uhm, there is a home button. And who needs fast forward when you have the much better scrubbing function?

I definitely do not want more buttons. The small number of buttons makes the remote so easy to use without looking.

I have the new Siri remote and the Power button currently DOES NOT have the option to learn IR codes. IR is needed for those of us where HDMI CEC doesn't work.
Rechecked it today with the new tvOS 14.6, Power button IR still missing.

If you need the Power button to be able to send IR commands.
Please
report it to Apple (link below), hopefully they will fix it if they get enough requests. I asked for the Power button to control at least 2 devices (TV and audio equipment) via IR. And Learning IR for Discrete Power On/Off and Toggle Power On/Off and Discrete switch to desired HDMI input. Shouldn't be that hard for Apple they are already doing the IR Learning for Volume + - and Mute.
Feedback - Apple TV - Apple

Apple promised Power IR control, but so far it is missing.
On the Apple TV 4K Tech Specs it states “Control your TV or receiver via IR or CEC”. With a footnote (3): "Powering on and off, switching input to Apple TV, controlling volume, and mute.

Power Button and IR status & Temporary Workaround.

It only has a few buttons as it is. I figured out what everything did in like 10 seconds and it now is all operated by touch without having to look at it at all.

Come on...

Uhm, no there isn't. There is a back button which is stuffed with various functions including home. I want a dedicated home button.

I do. And Apple agrees with me that there should be ff because they included the functionality but hid it in a combo.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. But I want more buttons and fewer button/gesture combos.

I had one of those silicon Elgato cases for my previous ATV remote. Not only did it help with orientation iof the remote in your hand, but it helped keep it from sliding off the wooden arms of my chair. Any idea if there is a similar product for this new remote?
First thing I did was put on some felt pads (didn't have any rubber ones lying around). I added 4 feet on the bottom corners, so you can use it on a flat surface without it rocking around due to the curved back. I put a felt pad on the mute button, as it's in the exact position that the play/ pause button used to be. I kept hitting mute. Much more usable for me now.

The top right button under the scrub wheel is a home button. You can set it in the Apple TV preferences under Remote to go to "home" instead of to the Apple TV app.
