Waste of time. The more smart “features” that are added to phones, the more of a distraction they become. It’s endemic.

Look at the world around us today... count how many people are dicking around on their phones compared to how many people are just simply observing the real world. The next time you are hanging out with friends, try not to pull out your phone. Bet you can’t...

Welcome to the future. I say live it or live with it.

If this can work with Alexa and not require HomeKit for smart interaction, that would be wonderful. I assume it would either be an Alexa overall integration, or potentially individual alexa-compatible apps (e.g. wemo, etc) a bit at a time...

A lot of people are missing the bigger announcement: this is a new Siri framework that's infinitely scalable. It no longer relies on Apple releasing specific Siri APIs for niche app types. Any and all apps in the world's biggest App Store can integrate any of its functions with Siri. Siri itself will be using this new framework, replacing outdated and constrained frameworks that have been around since before Apple acquired Siri.

It probably won’t replace the other intents. This one is lower-level, which makes it more flexible, but also less convenient. The existing intents have far more advanced understanding of language — you can not only vary the words, but the sentence structure, and it will still attempt to understand your meaning. These, OTOH, are basically a fixed command line that doesn't allow much variation.

This looks very promising. I wonder how long it will take devs to implement the changes or 'shortcutability' on their own app side. This could, down the line, actually also let iOS devices work with google home - just by sending and remote controlling the Google Home app.

In some cases, it's already there with no changes required by the app developer, as this takes advantage of user activities (which are also used for stuff like the 3D Touch menu).

I think this is a cop out if anything from what Siri was originally intended to be. Imagine if somehow you lose your workflow. Due to privacy, Apple needs you to provide Siri more data about you in order for it to function somewhat.

There's nothing new about this other than you providing more manual labor than normal to help Siri learn.
I don't think you read the post which actually says mostly the opposite of what you claim to get out of it.

This app is only in a limited beta now and likely does not have all the functionality that the release version will. Judging it by the fact that it only does what Siri can already do is probably not a good idea.

It looks like you still need to manually send the message? Is there an option to have it sent automatically? Without leaving Siri too?

I have this same question. I'm playing with the beta, but I don't see any way to actually SEND a message with Shortcuts. It just populates the text I want to send, and it still requires me to manually press the send button. That's not how the demonstration at WWDC went if I recall correctly.

The only way for this to work at the moment would be to assign the above tasks to a simple phrase, such as “Hey Siri I’m home” which isn’t really a bad compromise if you have hands free Siri.

Right, but it won't allow you to assign music to say the living room speakers... and there's no feature to just turn on the TV and what not. The TV has IR... so not sure why that's not an option.

Why are these renders always on iPhone X now? The majority of iPhones in usage today still have a home button.

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to invoke these custom Siri shortcut commands on a HomePod?

It would be a serious limitation if it relies on an iPhone/iPad hearing and running the shortcuts.

I really can’t wait for this to go live. Loved Workflow and knew it was a great acquisition by Apple to really beef up Siri. I’m mostly excited that it’ll be considered a native app for Apple allowing more integration with your device(s) and hopefully, like some users mentioned, it’ll mark the beginnings of Siri becoming a better virtual assistant than the competitors (i.e. allowing background access such as running particular Shortcuts when arriving home, etc. without the need of activating Siri).

I think more users are going to be happier with this than they think now when it’s officially released. Workflow has been a game changer and it’s great to see Apple really let the team remain it’s own even after acquisition (though I’d think they’ll officially retire the Workflow app when iOS 12 is released to the public.)

Would this allow siri to automate non-home kit compatable smart home devices via their 3rd party app? i.e. smart locks?

I’ve had that question as well. I think so, so long as the 3rd party app developers donate the requisite intents. But then that makes HomeKit semi-irrelevant.

Bixby already does more than Siri, which in all honesty, is not saying much. Lol.
Read the link, Apple will never be on that level of AI. Siri's been around longer than Bixby, yet it's the worst DA around.
I understand.... I’m just saying without developer app support and integration, how much use are we getting out of these AI services. Hell, google can do some amazing things, but without developer support & intergration, were limited only to what google thinks is important to us. Even the company Samsung bought, before it was Bixby (Viv) said that there AI usefulness, will depend on how many developers integrate it into there apps......& Samsung has no developers even considering Bixby. Just....wait...and see. When IOS 12 is released, you’ll see what I mean.

ok that is awesome! This feature, and better notifications, are the highlights of ios 12 imho.

It appears that they will: https://www.imore.com/siri-shortcuts-faq

"These can be triggered via voice on iOS, but it'll even be possible on the Apple Watch, HomePod, and CarPlay too."

This could allow Sonos owners to perform functions like grouping speakers together using Siri from an Apple Watch, or getting Sonos speakers to play a particular radio station directly from the BBC, as an example, without having to cast it from an iOS device via AirPlay 2.

Over to you, app developers!

Does anyone have any idea how to sync shortcuts between iPhone and iPad? I can’t find a setting
