What is the obsession with round? It literally only makes sense for an analog watch. Who wants to read a text on or anything on something round?

It just stems from analog watch faces being round and wanting an always-on analog watch face on a smartwatch. There's truth to what you say... you can accommodate text a lot easier/better on a square face. Many people just like/prefer the look/feel of a round watch face.

The round design still looks nicer to me, but it's the past. A digital watch is best with a square screen because that's the best way to show information. Image a round computer screen, phone screen, or television screen. It might look cool, but it's not suited for its purpose.

It will take a while for people to adapt to this, and some will prefer the old fashioned way just as some people prefer records over streaming music. Nothing wrong with that, but Amazon isn't going to make an Echo that plays records.
The round design looks nicer to most people. I even have a square Fossil watch that I wear from time to time. I'm a huge proponent of forward thinking and pushing tech to new boundaries. But the current Apple Watch just leaves a lot to be desired in terms of design. I'm not against a square watch face as I own one, I'm just against the Apple Watch in it's current form.

It looks like a tech toy and not a beautiful digital accessory with as much thought put into design as function. Watches serve two purposes for most people, a way to tell time and a fashion accessory. The Apple Watch completely falls short in the ladder category. Compare the design of the iPhone to the watch and you wonder where they dropped the ball along the way.

which is roughly the chance I will purchase a square apple watch. - horrid styling

To be honest, round doesn't make sense anymore. I think this is a form vs function. I was a hater of the square, but after using it I completely agree the square is the way to go.

I hate Tim Cook, but the Apple watch has evolved nicely to the point I think it's a good product. Hopefully the next couple of version takes it to the outstanding category. When it first came out, I found it wasn't responsive and had some lag.

The day we see a round Apple Watch is the day we see Steve Jobs reanimated so he can he put it through the crusher. I would never say never, but the chances of it happening any time soon are vanishingly slim.

I wouldn't say never, but it would around the same time as they release a round monitor and a round iPhone.

Argh yet another WearOS watch with that horrible thick black bezel around it. Yuk. That's what put me off the Fossil Sport as well.

TBH if I had an iPhone I'd get an Apple Watch, it'd be insane not to. In fact it's missing the Apple Watch that might soon steer me back to one.

Why
do people
think this is a
good idea
for a
watch?
It's really confusing to me. It reminds me of the Echo Spot which was round and is mostly useless for getting information. Rectangles are for reading.....
It's about style and looks. The square doesn't look as nice to me and many many others. I don't read a novel on my watch, just a quick look at text messages and emails.

Well, “you” and many others must be in the extreme minority because Apple sold 35 million of the things and completely dominates the smartwatch market, and outsold the entire Swiss watch industry.

Not much different from the thick bezels on the AW.

35 million sheep. Baaaaaaaa! 🐑

Seriously, I think Apple could sell even more if they moved to a round watch face with an always on "analog" watch face that could be customized to look like a higher-end watch.

As far as style is concerned, which looks better to you?

I've never had any desire to have a round Apple Watch. just a waste of screen. I think back and most of the digital watches I've had since I was young were all rectangular. they also fit best on cuff style bands which I think look better

On topic though, I prefer round-face watches and the Android ones look better than the iWatch to me, but I think it has more to do with the soft, rounded, almost feminine design of the iWatch than with the fact that it's rectangular.

If they gave it the harder-edged iPad Pro treatment I might look in that direction, but as it stands, I'm not wearing that thing. I identify as heteromasculine and (nothing against those who differ from me) I find the iWatch too girly for my taste.

I don’t get the obsession with circular watch faces. I mean, it’s not a watch face anymore, it’s a display. And who wants a round display...?

C'est la vie. If it were round we'd see as many posts from folk wanting it to be square. Which is kind of fair enough...the internet just exposes us to a potential ~7.7bn opinions

Personally I prefer it square and think the shape is already iconic. There are of course those who are never happy - if there were square and round versions they'd want a triangle.

I would love if the next Apple Watch would have an option of a round display. I would buy it on the first day.

However, I do love how some Macrumors members get all riled up on just the thought of an optional round watch, it's blasphemous to them.

The rectangular design that Apple uses now, I think it’s very modern and sophisticated in its own way for a ‘tech watch’. But I do believe in the future, Apple will offer a ‘round display’, now that Jony Ive is no longer affiliated with the design department for the Apple Watch.

change is a good thing, and offering more variety for the Apple Watch, can only expand to a larger demographic for those who would like to see a round design, which we all know is very ‘doable’ for Apple.

Only downside I can see in offering choice here is that a round display would add complexity to an operating system that would now need to cater for two completely different UI. The potential for unintended behaviour (bugs) would be greatly increased. Two separate OS wouldn't be much better. Not very Apple.
