watchOS 3, set to be released this fall, introduces some radical changes to the operating system that runs on the Apple Watch. There are new apps and watch faces, interface tweaks overhaul the way we interact with watchOS, and a new feature for keeping apps running in the background allows for instant launch times.

Since most of us won't be able to check out watchOS 3 until the fall of 2016 following an extended beta testing period, we've created a video to highlight the must see features.

Glances are gone in watchOS 3, replaced with a "dock" accessible by pressing the side button. 10 favorite first and third-party apps can be added to the dock, where they'll be kept continually up to date and able to launch in a second. Changing watch faces is done with a left and right swipe, while a downward swipe now brings up the Control Center.

Activity Sharing features allow Apple Watch owners to share workout and activity information with friends, and there are new options for Wheelchair users. A Breathe app guides users through daily deep breathing sessions, an Apple Watch can unlock a Mac, and Apple has added apps for Reminders, Find My Friends, and accessing one's heartbeat.

Watch faces support more complications, there are three new watch faces to choose from, including a new Activity watch face, and an SOS feature will make sure an option to get help in an emergency is always right at your fingertips. On the iPhone, there's a new Face Gallery for customizing Apple Watch faces, and watchOS 3 allows the Apple Watch to be located via Find My iPhone.

For full details on the new features coming in watchOS 3, make sure to check out our watchOS 3 roundup. Don't miss out on our previous videos, which have covered iOS 10 and macOS Sierra features:

Thats what I thought. Thats dumb and defeats the whole purpose of Glances. So now we've ruined glances and forced the user to go back into the app to make sure they are always on the page they want to glance at.

FAIL

The apps update on the dock, your don't have to click to go in to them.

Not even close, Apple Watch is growing up a lot with watchOS 3.

It's not a case. It's a clear skin. Just something to help protect my investment. So far holding up great.

I wouldn't worry too much...

I've had the aluminum Sport model for close to a year. In San Francisco's downtown I've had more than a few bumps with exterior walls (stucco, cement, granite, etc), newspaper boxes, light poles, etc. Every time that happens I assume there's going to be an ugly nick on the case or glass. Nope, hasn't happened yet. Pretty tough treatment/coating on the case/glass. Wish that were true with my cameras and lenses...

Really looking forward to watchOS 3.0. Thanks for the video!

The apps in the dock are able to show a simplified glance version when they're zoomed out. Once you tap into an app from the dock, it restores the full amount of information displayed.

I saw this in one of the WWDC sessions, but I can't remember which one. It was one of the watchOS ones. There are some pretty interesting videos.

Great to see Watch OS 3 is going to bring much needed performance updates.

Do like my Watch a lot (even after subjecting it to a fair bit of knocking-oops) and my biggest bug bear has been performance and responsiveness.

It's definitely tough. The stainless model however scratches a ton. That's all I'm trying to protect from. Got mine replaced due to a Taptic Engine failure and figured I'd wrap it to save it from scratches.

Glad you enjoyed the video!

Any word yet on what the new background activity does to battery life?
Not conclusive testing or anything but it still lasts me all day no problem. Feels basically the same right now.

Nice video. Looks like 3.0 is going to alleviate a good bit of AW complaints. Scratches are emdemic to stainless steel, unfortunately. For those wondering, it's not an AW thing, it's a stainless thing. Scratches on stainless are akin to wear patterns in leather. Just builds character.:)

One of the most used features of my Watch is the Now Playing glance. It allows these quick actions: raise to wake, flick up for glances, tap once to pause or skip; or raise, flick, and scroll the Digital Crown to quickly adjust volume. It works for Music, Overcast, TV Shows, Movies, YouTube ... It works while using or AirPlay or Bluetooth or HDMI as well.

It seems the new watchOS 3 interaction would be: raise to wake, press side button, tap app to go full screen, then tap/scroll for desired action. An extra step to me means slower interactions with my Watch, not what I was hoping.

NO CUSTOM watch faces STILL?! At least give us complications in the Photos watch face! Along with an analog photo watchface!

Yes i agree.
Apple need to be more consistent across their devices. What makes perfect sense to me is for Apple to have the "Control Centre" swipe-able from left to right. You would summon the control centre by swiping up. Then you should be able to swipe right to get to the Now Playing (This should behave the same way as the current glance). And swipe left should present you with homekit shortcuts. That way it's consistent with iOS 10's behaviour.

I don't know what Apple's UI designers are smoking these days...

I agree with all of this! I missed the Watch part of the keynote so this is the first I've seen of the new features and I'm incredibly annoyed that I'm losing my Now Playing glance. I agree that glances didn't work out like they planned, but there's no reason to change the "swipe up" from "full glances, including a control center", to "JUST a control center".

I also use the Heart Rate glance occasionally to check my heart rate. Where would I even go for that anymore? Right now the only place it shows, besides the glance, is in the Activity app while you're recording a workout.

I'm with you. But I did notice that there is a new music complication. You can just press on the complication and the music (or "now playing") app instantly launches.

But what if I'm already using my complications for other things that I find useful? Now I have to get rid of something else that's giving me functional data just so I can have a shortcut to the music app on my watch face?

If you have two macs two separate iClouds accounts, can the watch be setup to unlock both macs, or is it the iCloud account the iPhone is registered?
thanks

Do the apps really launch instantly??

Yep, it's pretty great once you experience it. :)

There is of course, a catch. Only the apps in your complications and the Dock launch instantly. But really, I use about 10 apps frequently anyway. This is completely fine, considering the Watch only has 512MB ram, so there is a limit.

One of the main benefits of this redesign is that you can set up multiple watch faces with different complications and swipe through them which can act like an app launcher. So instead of swiping up, you can swipe left or right to get another watch face and tap on the music complication to launch the music app.
