Handwriting on iMessage not working

It says to press pen on lower right of keyboard but I have no pen on lower right. I'm using standard keyboard? Any ideas?

are the 3 icons showing up next to the text input field? camera, heart, app store.

If you're on an iPhone, turn the phone sideways and the handwriting feature automatically comes up.

The three 3 icons show up.

Turning sideways works - but I normally keep rotation lock on. If that is only way to get it to show on keyboard then???? Not sure it is worth to use cause I don't like screen rotation.
