Yes, it's 2009 now. I had not thought of it ut UNIX would be 40 now. I'm not old enough to have been in on the start. The first UNIX computer I used was in 1981. It was running on a DEC VAX. I remember when they brought the system into the lab. everyone was waiting to try to out it was THE hot thing at the time. But for practical reason VMS was much more wide spread. Not until the later 80's did I get to use UNIX full time. I've only been on UNIX full time for 20 years.

Unix really impacted the computer industry in so many different ways. Us mac users are running a variant of it, thanks to apple's decision to buy openstep.
I'm also running it when I don't use OSX - I'm a big fan of ubuntu.
Being such an old OS, its really amazing at how solid, and bullet proof it is, compared to some of the newer OSs that have come (and gone).
I have a soft spot in my heart for the terminal and using the CLI.

How many total rewrites has UNIX had since the start?
How about NONE!
I think if he saw the iPhone then he would think that it was not unix and something that would never be possible. But then if he did not see it and you asked him how would you make a call I wonder what command he would think of to make that call
I really think he would freak out about the Mac Pro and that his+a few of his friends code would be still used 40 years later to make movies. If he was told that after he finished writing the code for it.

ROFL! I remember all the ASCII banners I used to print out on my continuous feed dot matrix printer. Which I still have. Hmmmm...

This was C-64 and not Unix, but do you remember those PrintShop type programs also, and you could make greeting cards and fold them up and give them to people?
Oh, and speaking of Commodore... the C-128 ran CP/M as an alternate OS... *)^&)*%&)$# ... so it came on a 5 1/4" right? Or maybe two? To make a backup copy of it, you literally had to swap the target and destination disks in the drive back and forth for every single file on the disk. Didn't matter if the 0.5kb file would fit in system memory. 😡🙄
Back to Unix, I had this professor I loved at Michigan... he was Sri Lankan and he would get really excited and speak really loudly, and he had these amazing diatribes... here's the Unix-related one:
"And then I have to deal with software! Every time I breath there's a new version. I was sitting at my desk, using my computer, and it was fine. I wanted to print a document? I type print, and the document prints. Then, one day, I type print, and no document! I get an error message. So I call IT, and I say, "Hey, what's this?" And the fellow from IT says, "Now you must type 'dprint'." Dprint? What the hell is dprint? What the hell was wrong with print?"

Back in the FORTRAN IV days (70's), working with a buddy, we created a banner printing program that had individual scalable letters that used the actual character to print the banner character. We supported A-Z, a-z, 0-9 and a bunch of symbols.
It was a lot of work, but fun to use. 🙂

You mean this program? 😉 I'd seriously dig them out and post a picture if I wasn't actually at work right now. But yes, I used to use that all the time. Now I use Illustrator. 😀
I remember banner printing program like those also, but they had the drawback of making certain letters harder to see because of the difference in ink coverage.
