Surely if the computer is connected to the Apple clock by internet it should just be automatic anyway?
The Apple clock (NTP server) has no clue what timezone you're in. I think it always gives the time in GMT and expects your computer to be able to apply the proper timezone. If your computer hasn't been updated with the new dates, then it's applying the wrong timezone (and will continue to show the wrong time for six weeks, every year, until you update it).

Well that makes sense, but is a backwards way of doing it in my opinion. I thought my computer would retrieve the correct time (GMT+/- whatever) based on what time zone I have my computer set to (with the Apple clock holding the master database of all DST corrections). That way, there would have been no need to perform an OS update to each and every Mac on the planet just to get them to tell the correct time.

Anyway. I'll just manually alter the clock for 3 weeks :) I see no reason to update until either Leopard comes out, or I get an Intel-chipped computer.

I'm glad I got my term paper done before DST started or else I'd be screwed an hour. Although it is nice to have some light at 7pm. But I lost an hour of sleep. Not cool.

Cheers, but I'm kind of happy with 10.4.3 though.

Coincidentally I was on 10.4.3 for a long time as well, but mostly because downloading the combo update on dial-up takes a while so I kept putting it off. 10.4.8 is better...it's not a huge difference, but it is better, and you should upgrade because otherwise you're stuck with some old, outdated stuff...you know, like daylight saving time rules.

(In fact I don't believe the OS updates since then have been of any use to PPC users.)

Sure they are. It's the same OS, x86 or PPC, so any changes affect both. Yes, there are also some architecture-specific fixes, but that applies to PPC as well as x86. (Such as "Addresses an issue in which text typed with the Hangul input method may not be visible while the Caps Lock key is active, on PowerPC-based Macs", from the 10.4.8 update. Granted, this probably doesn't affect millions of users. ;) ) As Apple says, "This update offers many improvements, including the following, which apply to both Intel- and Power-PC-based Macs unless otherwise noted"....

Well the daylight was always there, you just didn't get up early enough/get your work hours moved to take advantage of it.

I'm not against DST, I actually enjoy the extra daylight in the evenings. However if we never switched our clocks again I'd be OK with that. If I want more time in the evening when it's light then I'll modify my work hours to do so. Just pick a time system and stick with it. Or at least make DST an international standard so that we don't deal with a month or two of timezone confusion. Why should I have to wonder if GMT is 5, 6, or 7 hours ahead of me based on the day of the year?

i could get up at 5:00 in the morning...it doesn't mean i can start work before 8:00.

not everyone has the option to pick and choose working hours.

Great, this means I stayed up til 5 AM, and woke up at 12.

...DST sucks.
I feel your pain... I was a designated driver for a Bachelor's party this weekend (sober at a bar = 90% less fun). I got home at 4am Sunday morning and set my clock an hour ahead... then got up at 9:30am to help babysit my nieces and nephew. Slept well last night, but I'm still tired!

Bah, I still want my hour of sleep back

Start grilling breakfast. ;)
Mow your lawn at 6:00 a.m. ;)

If I had a choice I'd much rather keep the current hours year round and push school back an hour to keep kids from waiting for the bus in the dark...

I'd much rather have it dark later in the morning during winter months to keep some light for the evenings.

It just seems like an odd system to try to "force" everyone to shift times rather than just keeping time constant and having employers shift working hours based on the season if they desire. For a current government that seems to complain about trying to over regulate anything and are strong advocates of personal responsibility, a government mandated time change seems like more of the former and less of the latter.

I'll probably complain less in fall when I get a 49 hour weekend.
