Interesting... 22 replies in this thread and not a single person complaining about the fact that the display on the new imacs gradiates from darker to lighter from top to bottom, no not viewing angle related. It also turns out it's not just mine... (I bought one yesterday, then came to find on here that it's a universal phenomenon...)

Strange.. I quite plainly responded in your other thread that I did not have this problem, and yet it somehow becomes "Universal" when you want to make a case over it. It's not universal. I took you seriously enough to go to CompUSA this morning to look at their display models to see if mine was the exception to this supposedly universal rule.. and while one of them might have had a shift (nowhere near the 10% you're seeing, though) the other most definitely did NOT.

I'm sorry to hear you're having a problem, and that the problem apparently is not unique... but I have to say that claiming a situation is universal based on a limited number of reports is doing a grave disservice to both your own credibility, and to Apple.

I think it's more an issue of viewing angle than bad displays.

I checked my Tibook and I saw the effect of the brightness increasing as you go down the page, but only at certain angles. The viewing angle on the 15" and smaller displays is less than that of the 17" and 22" displays.
Check the Apple pages here:
http://www.apple.com/displays/

15" iMac and standalone- 120 degrees vert., 90 degrees horiz
17" & 22" - 160 degrees vert/horiz

I couldn't find anything for the portables.

I am sorry to hear that some of the displays on the new iMac have a brightness problem. Mine is near perfect. Now, I am not a graphics designer, I use this thing to surf, play games, do a bit of programming etc. but I do not see the top to bottom brightness issue on my screen. If this is just an issue on a few, you may want to call Apple, as previously suggested, and see if they can fix/replace the screen.

Well, based ON personal experience, neither my iMac, nor one of the 2 others I have seen, have this problem. Another message in this thread is from another user who does not have this problem. Now, even if these are the only 3 iMacs on the entire planet that don't have it, then it STILL is not a "universal" problem. In further contradiction to the "low end screens are defective conspiracy", one of the 17" studio displays at the local CompUSA very plainly DOES have a dramatic shift in brightness, but in this case it is from left to right.
