Hard Drive Dock

I have a NexStar drive dock and 2tb WD Green drive. Does it hurt the drive to leave it on for extended periods of time?
 
Probably not unless it gets too hot.

What do you consider "extended periods of time"? And will it mostly just sit there with some occasional use?
