Please keep in mind I'm relatively new to macs, and technically, I am maybe just above average.

So I've owned this used macbook pro about 6mos. (it's about 2-3yrs old) It worked almost flawlessly, until recently, when I downloaded a newer version of Itunes. After that, whenever I went to open Itunes, the computer would lock up (consistent spinning beachball) and I couldn't force quit, or anything I had to force power down with the power button.

I also have been noticing pages with flash taking much longer to loadm also wth the spinning beach ball.

I ran disk utility, and came up with the following results-
    Invalid volume file count
(It should be 788135 instead of 788136)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 191989 instead of 191988)
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 6370836 instead of 6371092)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.

I tried to back the system up using time machine, but after about 80%, I get an error message.

Where do I go from here?

    thanks for any help!

    Percy.
