Hard drive has not stopped running for hrs

I have a back up terabyte drive that I use for Time Machine, my question is that I have turned off time machine but the hard drive on my mac is continuously running and will not stop.I did upgrade the other night for the new OSX but come on man this thing hasn't stopped all night any ideas on whats going on? I'm new to these iMacs so any suggestions would be more than helpful. Also is there anyway to alter the backups on time machine or is it every hr on the hr that it has to back up too.

You could also just not Have an update every hour. I use an external drive myself, and I have it backed up maybe once a week or so.

Why keep it plugged in anyway? Just unplug it and the problem is solved.
