Hard drive on a mac book pro

Hi,

I've got several external hard drives I'm having problems with. They generally stopped working, one of them after a shock.
One of them was working fine on my Power Book and started going wrong when I plugged it into my new Mac Book Pro...
Any idea why?
Just wandering if there's a free/cheap software that would enable me to retrieve the data on those? Id it normally sucessful?
I have a very important Logic audio folder that I need, how do you think I should go about retrieving it?
I have two Lacie drives and a maxtor and I need help
