hard drive problems

I believe my hard drive is starting to go out unfortunately, is there anyway i can check this to be sure? My laptop just goes out sometimes when I'm using it, going to sleep mode for no reason and then I'm forced to wake it up. How can i check on this or what can i do? Any help would be appreciated. Thankfully I have everything backed up. 🙂

Check with with Disk utility.

If it's your StartUp Disk start your Mac with the Installation Disc by holding the C key on your keyboard.
Then Run Disk Utility and check/repair as needed.

In your power mode settings check for your configuration when running on Battery for the sleep/standby/wakeup functions.
You may have it set up to turn off the Hard Drive when reaching certain low battery level by changing it you'll be OK.
