i did try opening it!! but i couldnt!! it was like the spindle top was glued onto the top of the case, i couldnt find any more screws to undo. could one be under the sticker??

there are ones under the sticker fyi.

there is a software called VirtualLab Data Recovery, it's the #1 product downloaded on download.com. I have used it in the past.

http://www.binarybiz.com/vlab/windows.html

They do have a mac version, but the windows version is better. You can recover mac volumes with it. You can also image the disk from sector XXX to sector XXX very easily in the advanced options.

So you could get the data that is around the scratched area.

Basically what you have going on is a head crash. You would probably need to replace the heads and only copy a certain portion of the disk. But that isn't a job for someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

ohh looks like some very interesting software. thanks for your input!! i will definitely check it out.

but yea the software wont really be worth it unless i replace the heads will it, if the problem really is that. i have a good idea what is going on and how to replace stuff, im not an idiot and im studying IT at uni (not that it indicates anything), but im confident with my ability to learn new things. i have an identical HD as my XP machine, maybe i could change the head out from that?? eh

thanks though!

If you're adventurous, first try the software and just image a certain portion of the drive without changing the heads. try different parts.

if you do open it, try to keep that in a dust free area and blow compressed air on it every so often so it keeps the dust away.

if you change your heads, the old drive will likely be toast too (so keep that in mind). it must be an identical drive. this doesn't always work, if the drive has a big scratch in it, then you will have to be very careful.

good idea! i shall try somewhere near the end so that its nowhere near the error (the error is in the first 200mb) in the MBR or whatever its called.

dont have a compressor, i might do it outside on a sunny day, or borrow a compressor of a friend.

im 95% sure its an identical drive (they are both 7200.11 Seagates), not at home so i cant check right now, ill make sure i backup my working drive b4 attempting it though of course.

Definitely not outside, too much dust, I was thinking a can of compressed air. You can pick one up at BestBuy for a couple bucks.

Dust can make the drive crash again, so you want to do it somewhere clean where there is not a lot of people coming in and out.

Right well in that case my room will be perfect for it. Its sort of underground and when i shut the windows there is no air movement at all. Its tiled so there is no dust from the carpet. Sound ok?

Data rescue & lost file names

Help..! to cut a long story short, had to undergo a DataRescue (using Data Rescue II) on an external Firewire Drive used for the Backup of all the Digidesign Pro Tools Sessions. This Ext Drive (previously containing all above info) was accidently been configured to run with Leopard's "Time Machine" and was interrupted halfway when the engineer realised his error !!
So now I have managed to recuperate most data...but unfortunately nothing is in order anymore (WAV files in 1 folder, MP3 in another etc...) and the logical backup session folders of the Pro Tools are not there anymore !! Without these folders organised, there is no way of opening an Audio Session. ANY HELP ??

ouch that is quite a pickle... the backing up over the top of the other stuff pretty much makes that data unrecoverable.... sorry..

it will recover whatever it can, but not the stuff that has been written over...

ugh thats annoying!

Data Rescue II - Clone method

I have a damaged macbook drive. I used Data Rescue II to clone it, which appeared largely successful - 297GB cloned, 333MB bad. But oddly, the resulting .dmg is only 4GB. That's a suspiciously high compression ratio, no? Is that a weird file system glitch, or...?
thank you...
Eric

sounds to me like thats a big error happening and it cant recover much data. have you tried opening up the dmg? or is it still doing something?
