Hello, I'd appreciate some help on what the best solution to my hard drive woes are!

I'd like to get a server drive that will sit in the corner of my flat backing up and also work as a drive for my many photos and other media.

However, I also DJ on my laptop and need to have all my music on a local drive for when I play out. I have iTunes match, but don't want to rely on a venue having wifi if I suddenly need to find a tune.

I THINK I need a NAS drive that I plug into a router - and then when I play out, I unplug from the router it and take it with me.

Is this correct? Or should I be looking at getting two separate drives, one portable and one server-esque?

Or is there another solution all together?

I find the whole NAS/local/server drive thing very complicated, so any ideas and suggestions would be welcome!

It is not that hard really. A nas can do more things then just a drive but the main thing is it is networked and it will be all way slower then a local connected drive.
So a nas is nice if you want to share it with multiple devices or need other functions a normal drive cannot offer.
Server drive is bull you do not have an server with SAS controller.
A local connected drive is the cheapest and most portable option and easiest to connect.

I would recommend two units, a NAS to store everything on and to use for backups. The. You get a portable drive to take with you to venues. That way you have a separate copy in case some drunk pours a beer on the drive or laptop.
