I had the same experience. The WD scorpio blue was loud and slow. Upgraded to a Hitachi 500 GB 7200 rpm that was pulled from a Mac mini. Dead quiet just like the stock 160 GB 5400 I had, and very fast to boot.

There's a reason why Apple goes with them. :)

Really?

The 320GB Hitachi I pulled from my 2010 MBP was the loudest HDD I'd ever heard.

The SSD I have now is dead quiet.

Yes i understand some had seagate but any macbook pro i ever owned had a hitachi drive in it, were the seagates mostly found in older mbp's?

I can assure you that MBP use many more brands than Hitachi and have for years. My 2.0 ghz 15" MBP came with a Toshiba 5400rpm which I replaced with a WD 750GB 7200 rpm drive. Noticeable speed increase, not noticeable sound or battery use.

So how does the WD Black 750 gb 7200 rpm compares to the Hitachi drive in terms of noise and battery life?

I am in THE EXACT SAME boat as the OP. I too have a 2010 MBP13 2.4 with an OEM Toshiba 250GB in it that is DEAD silent and I too once upgraded it to WD Scorpio Blue 500GB, but threw it out the same day cause I couldn't stand the noise.

Now I want to try upgrading again. This time to 750GB.

Does anyone have any first hand experiences with 750GB drives in 2010 MPB13s? I dont care about speed, but care about NOISE, VIBRATIONS and BATTERY LIFE.

(I don't have $$ for SSD)

Hitachi has a reputation for making quiet drives. And rightfully so.

If silence is priority I would go with Hitachi 5K750.

PS. I don't have experience with this drive. I have a Momentus XT in my MBP 13" 2011 and it's dead quiet. I guess the MBP 2011 model has a better mounting system than the 2010 model.
