Since upgrading to Lion my 2009 iMac has been going crazy. Glitchy graphics, random freezes, etc. I want to run hardware checks on it to make sure everything is ok but the only way i know to do this is to put my original install DVD in and boot up, etc. The problem i (might) have is that i'm on Lion, and my install DVD is Leopard. What i'm asking is.. will this cause any issues, or is everything fine seeing that i won't be using the disk to login to my OS? :apple:

Here's the Apple support article on how to run the hardware tests: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

It is alright if you use your Leopard disc to run tests on a Lion drive.

Thanks! I tried searching the support section of Apple's site but it's a bit cluttered. I'll post results later. :)

you can also stop into an apple store (genius bar appt) and they can hook it up to their test server... rather quick and they can answer questions as well.

Damn. All it tests is RAM. I think it's my video card going bad. Anyway to test that?

I love the idea. The only bad thing is the closest Apple store is 2 hours away. Do authorized repair places have anything to test with? Closest one of those is an hour away.

Really just RAM? When I hold down D on startup on my mid 07 iMac, I can test any part of the hardware.

I'm not sure if ALL the authorized repair centers have the testing equipment, but the ones I've visited had. I'd imagine these centers would have a hard time getting reimbursed from Apple for warranty repairs without the equipment. The best way to know for sure, of course, is just to call the center and ask an employee.

However, just be aware, you'll likely not get your computer repaired on the same day, just due to parts availability. I'm not sure if the non-Apple repair centers would have, let's say, the video cards for iMacs in stock.

Good point. I might have to call and check. Actually, i think i just need to check the other, longer test option before i test. I'll report back tomorrow. Hopefully it's just Lion screwing up my system. It's 50/50 considering the Lion upgrade is when it started.

2+ hours of testing and it found no hardware issues. That's good, i suppose, but it leaves me even more clueless as to what my problem is. I freeze up, randomly, probably five times or more a day now. I'd be fine with that, say it's the Lion/video freeze issue and wait for an update but that's the problem.. i'm rarely watching video when it does it. It's watching a video, switching desktops, clicking an app, etc. Just random stuff. I very, very rarely got this on Leopard or Snow Leopard. It's driving me crazy.

Not sure if this will help or not, as to figuring out my issue. Anyone?
