I just opened up System Preferences (after installing Xcode and Maya PLE 5.0), and saw the Hardware Preference Pane.

It says:

POWERPC 7450 v2.1 (tech 0)
Clock Speed: 800 MHz L1 Cache: 32KB Inst, 32KB Data

Bus Speed: 100 MHz L2 Cache: (dropdown menu) 256KB, or None

AltiVec: Yes

Power: (checkbox) (checked) Nap

What is this preference pane? Where did it come from?

What would happen should I uncheck Nap? Or select none for the L2 Cache, but I'm assuming that would just slow down my computer.

Edit: I unchecked Nap. It made my computer a lot quicker. With it checked, iTunes too 5.97 seconds to open. With it unchecked, iTunes too 3.69 seconds to open.

I'm guessing it's from Xcode, because my computer has been slow since I installed that, but I'm not sure.

This question seems to come up periodically, and yes, your guess is correct--it's installed as part of XCode (the CHUD tools, specifically).

I'm surprised turning off Nap made such a big difference for you--it's not perceptable on my computer, though it caused the thing to draw 40W more power with it off. Most tests have shown that it might make a difference in XBench, but in real world apps it usually has no noticable effect.
