Is there no way to access the hardware test on the apple supplied DVD whilst using a wireless keyboard??

Don't you have some USB keyboard lying around?
But I have had no problem accessing boot options with a wireless keyboard and a 2007 iMac.

its worked for me using wireless, just hold it down a while longer and wait until the hardware test icon shows up.
