Yesterday I got a "there is not enough application memory" error, so I closed some programs and that seemed to fix it. Today I tried to restart and it froze on shut down, and then again on restart. After it finally booted, doing almost anything gives me the beach ball or just freezes. I could open programs and files, but I had to be VERY patient. (I managed to open uTorrent and it said 'Error: Input/Output error', if that helps)

I ran Disk Utility and "repaired disk permissions", but it didn't help.

Next, I tried to run Hardware test and it seemed to be making slow progress until about 25%, then it jumped to 95% and froze. . .and it's still frozen there 5 hours later. It sounds like it's working hard, and it's very hot, but doesn't respond. Clicking Stop Testing and pressing cmd+. doesn't stop the test.

How long should I wait before I try hard restart? Will that damage it?
