And yes, anything that gets kids to read is a good thing... strange that most of the people I see reading Harry Potter on the way to work were women in their 20's and early 30's.
Along those lines, I get the impression that there are a lot of parents and kids who are reading the Harry Potter books together, and I think it's pretty cool that the book provides this common interest for them. No, I'm not a parent and no, I'm not especially a fan of the books (having only read the first one). But I'm glad they've been a success for Rowling.

Aah... but we've had Harry Potter threads for the fans before in which they've been able to discuss Hogwarts stuff to their heart's content. Any dissenting voices were quickly quashed — and quite rightly too, in an appreciation thread.

Although the thread title is inflammatory, it's also nice to hear some counter-balancing arguments from people who are less than impressed. It's one of those topics that is guaranteed to polarise many people...

The only problem I have with this thread is the title. The generic title of :
"{something a lot of people like} Sucks"

comes across as trolling no matter how the discussion progresses. If you wish to start a general discussion about disliking anything a better title would have been:
"Anyone else here dislike {something a lot of people like}?".

Im not a Harry Potter fan only because I never read the first couple books. Maybe if I had kids or was a kid when it came out, Id be a fan. Im 26, so it was a smidge after my time. I think I was more into cars and chicks when that stuff came out. Now that it's a phenomenon, its hard for me to take the time to read all 7 (?) books and catch up.

i have heard, that chicks love harry potter books ;)

AND!!!!! there is a flying car somewhere in those harry potter books (that chicks would love guys to have too) :D

"Success" is a bit of an understatement, don't you think? ;)

I prefer the Phillip Pullman serier "His Dark Materials", but anything that could take my niece away from the fact her father walked out on their family is fine with me. We both read all six books this past summer and it was nice to see a smile on her face. Harry may not be great literature, but the series is harmless escapism and a good gateway to reading.

What a banal, contrived soup pot of poorly stitched-together anecdotes involving children running around witnessing MAGICAL events and casting SPELLS. Can somebody tell me what exactly the ghosts running around the dining hall exist for? They don't even seem to interact with potter and friends. Terribly inane.

Let's hear it from other Potter haters. Everyone else who can't wait for Harry Potter 24 can go post somewhere else.

you obviously have no imagination, and probably very little joy in your life.

Why don't you post some of the things you like so that I can start a thread about how they suck.

HP is not exactly what i call good reading, i couldn't get through the first couple of chapters, poorly written in my opinion. Never even bothered with the movies

Oh and two and a bit words Raymond. E. Feist

Haven't read any of 'em, don't have any desire to. Fantasy just isn't my cup of tea, and judging from all the merchandise and movie ads and other unneccessary promotional stuff you see for Harry Potter, this stuff is far too cutesy for my tastes. If kids like it and it gets them into reading, then great. But it seems like adults could find a heck of a lot higher calibur books to read.

I read 3 or 4 books every month, and there are still hundreds if not thousands of books out there that I want and intend to read. I supposed if I ever get through all of those and have nothing else to read, I might consider giving HP a try. :)

I guess the thing about HP that bugs me is it's just so all over the G-D place. I mean, come on people, get a little creative. You CAN read something that the whole rest of the world is not also reading. Venture out a little, it's not going to kill you. If you like it, fine, but if it's the only thing you read, then it's time to broaden your horizons. Same goes for kids -- start them out on HP if they like it, but don't let it be the only thing they read.

I have plenty of imagination and immensely enjoy the fine poon in my life, and I still think HP sucks.

But if you like it then good for you. Whatever empties your sack.

how many of the books have you read?

the first 2 chapters of the first book i presume?

I liked the books until I got to the part in book 6 where JK Rowling apparently tried to describe love and "snogging". O my god was that trashy.

Yes.

You know snogging means kissing right? Just to clarify for those that don't. They already want to burn the poor witches, don't wanna add fuel to the fire.

Well, this guy isn't impressed with Harry Potter either, but for entirely different reasons. Others then weren't impressed with him.

Fool.

Yikes. I'm religious, and *I* want nothing to do with that guy. :p
Aah... but then you're maybe not narrow-minded... maybe not even a nut...? :D

You see, I don't mind people being religious or people that's a bit nutty. I can even handle a fair amount of narrow-mindness, but put all three together, like in the case with this vicar, and it's get scary... ;)
