those are 2 different questions:
The first one doesn't make sense, because the size of the 15" macbook pro didn't actually change (for some years now), so no, it didn't "become too big".
Is the 13 the new mainstream? Maybe, since it has both a MBP and a MBA, but the 11 is mainstream too. But does that matter, or does your preference matter?
I used to like big screens, watching movies on them etc, but now I have a 11" macbook air. It's so small and light you can carry it anywhere without a problem. Some people can carry a 15" without a problem too, but I wouldn't...
Plus the high resolution of the macbook airs make up for the small screen, you can enjoy HD movies on it .

what is the new mainstream size, I think it was 15 and is now 13

Base 15" - £1550
Base 13" - £1000

I would say that most people ("mainstream") do not want to pay such a higher price in order to get a 15" screen. That doesn't mean that they wouldn't prefer a 15" screen.

Imho, the size of the 15 when closed is not that much of a difference than the 13. Same, when closed the 17 isn't that much bigger than the 15. The biggest deal is the weight difference. Some people don't mind the weight anyhow.

Like one poster asked, too big for what? There's no such thing as too big or too small unless you have bad eyes, how long you're lugging a machine around, desk space, or even what else is in your bag. Young people these days don't even mind surfing the net in their Blackberries so it all depends on what you can deal with. Too big? Aside from my iPad and Macs, I have an Alienware M18x. No complaints. So what's 'big'? ;)

Thanks to the resolution of the 13inch Air's I switched over..I find that a 15inch is just a little too big for my taste now.

Though I wonder what 1680 x 1050 would look like on our MBA 13s. Especially if Sir Ive reduced the size of our relatively massive screen border and expanded the screen to full 14"....

My friend has a 15" macbook pro 2008 one, I've used it at her place to check my Facebook and whatnot. I don't think it's too big or anything. LOL, I never thought it's heavy/too bulky.
When it all comes down to it, I think it's all about personal preferences and my personal preference for me is I love my 13" MBP. :D

Seems to me..

Too Big..?? I don't think so..

If it was, they wouldn't Sell Many.. and I am fairly certain it is THE most popular size still.. :apple:

Too big for some folks, Of Course.. and for my friend, who uses a TON of Desktop Space with a 17" Hi-Def Screen for Programming, a 15" is just TOO SMALL..

Go figure.. as in Life, The Choices are there for a Reason, make the one that seems BEST for YOU!!

I've used a 15" and 13" laptops for quite some time. If you asked me this 2 years ago, I'd say yeah it is too big, but for me the pendulum has swung the other way and I'm looking to buy a 15" MBP wither very soon, or if I can hold off, when apple releases an Ivy Bridge based laptop.

The 13" is more portable, but the 15" offers more screen size, and a discrete GPU that comes in handy. And in apple's case you can get faster CPUs if you wish to upgrade.

I second that - I always thought that maybe the 15inch was too big given my experience with 15inch PC laptops but once you get your hands on a MacBook Pro you quickly realise that not all 15inch laptops are built alike, that a 15inch MacBook Pro doesn't have the drawbacks associated with a traditionally bulky 15inch PC laptop.

14" - best comprise for portability and productivity

I had a 2010 high-res 15.6 MBP and 2010 13.3 MBA.

The 15.6 inch is a bit too heavy to be carried around all day long with other things in a backpack.

The 13.3 inch is great for portability, but lack the screen space for display dual Word doc side by side or working with Excel all day long.

I'm currently using a Thinkpad with 14" 1600X900 screen, weight same as 13" MBP and have same battery capacity as 15"MBP.

Best portable laptop I used so far.

too big is maybe the wrong saying of saying it. too out dated, optical drive, heat, no ssd standard, not what Steve Jobs called the future of notebooks. Is it the truck of the apple MacBooks?

Everytime I have a friend use my computer they say how much they like the bigger screen compared to their 13". I really love the bigger screen. I hardly use the potential power of this machine, so if a 15" Air would ever happen, I would switch to that for sure.

Fair enough. Dude, if you work for these companies, you'll be amazed what the concept gadgets of Apple or Intel / AMD "are" or "will be in the future". So with that, I'll say "What we have now are trucks". ;)
