Hm. Some good insight here. At this point Im thinking about just picking one up from the apple store and taking advantage of the 14 day grace period to give it a real test run. I know its a schiesty thing to do considering I would most likely be planning to return it and just get the used one I mentioned, but it seems like the best way to get a comparison right now. Heck I may keep the one from the apple store.

Man, I hate options sometimes.

The only thing with that is, when you return it to the apple store you'll be charged a restocking fee for opening it.. how about you spend like an hour at the apple store, pick it up, test as many applications possible all that stuff, and then try and maybe decide from there. Of course, it would still be hard to see how it'll factor in the day to day use, but that has to be a risk you're willing to take :D

Usually if you bring it back the next day they wont charge ya : )

I recently had to return a 13 inch MBP within the 14-day window at my local FutureShop and the returns clerk hardly blinked at me. She checked to ensure that the enclosure wasn't damaged and handed me the refund with virtually no questions asked. I presume that your local BestBuy will have the same policy, as the two stores are owned by the same parent company. Just make sure you retain all the packaging.

As for my own two cents, I recently went from a 15.4 inch Toshiba Satellite to a 14.1 Dell Latitude to my current 13 inch MBP. Looking back at the 15.4 inch model: I can't believe that I actually used that behemoth on my lap. The 14.1 is a decent compromise and sported a higher PPI screen, which was nice, but the far superior contrast and color on the MBP vs the Dell more than makes up for the smaller amount of screen real-estate.

I am really happy with my new(ish) MBP and find that the 13.3 inch form factor is damn-near spot on in terms of function/portability. The integrated graphics is more than decent and I'm able to play the games I want (Sins of a Solar Empire being the top contender.)

Funny to see this thread popup, since I just put up my 15" MBP for sale and really want to get a 13" instead. On the road, I almost exclusively use my laptop for mail, surfing and putting pictures on it (not editing) for storage. When I come home, I hook it up to my 24" Dell IPS and have all the power and space I can ask for. So I think a 13" would be perfect for me since the 15" always feels 'just' too big.

Still deciding if I should get the low end MBP (2.26ghz) or get the 2.4ghz with double the ram. Not sure if the price diff is worth it though.

I am considering doing this as well. All I do on my MBP is listen to music, do schoolwork, browse the internet and play wow. The 13" should handle all of these tasks fine I think. I will still want to see whats in the update before I switch it up though.

$2300? You're comparing the least expensive 13" model to one of the more expensive 15" models? That's just not a fair comparison. Let's look at some machines that are actually comparable. The $1500 13" vs the $2000 15". For $500, you get a larger screen, discreet graphics, a decent boost in processor speed, plus a larger hard drive. That's not a bad deal.

So your claim about the 15" being "nearly 2X the cost?" False. And a really weak argument to boot. There is a 15" model within $500 of either of the 13" models.

I don't care to battle you on this, since everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But please, don't post FALSE information.
Just comparing the orignal posters two models under consideration

Ironically I am feeling the same way in reverse. I had a 17, started traveling, got a 13 now wishing I had the 15. Grass is always greener right...

I've always had a 13"-15" laptop, and I think that 13" is the way to go.

However, my next laptop may be a 17", only because, while I have a nice 13" Dell, sometimes I want to game on the go, and in that case, 17" (or larger) is the way to go.

I just replaced my aging Dell 6000 (15.4", 1.6GHz 2GB) with a MBP 13. I carry 14" and 12" laptops from work on a regular basis too, and I travel on an airplane weekly. For me, the 13" size is the right compromise between a usably sized display and portability. (The hardware differences between the two are irrelevant for me: I don't game, so I don't need the GPU, and the spread in CPU speed is just 25% from bottom of the range to the top. 25% is nothing.)

Note that the $500 delta between a 13 and 15 MBP can buy a nice 24" external LCD. If you look at it that way, you wind up paying a great deal to get those extra two inches of portable display size, both in travel weight and in your display at 'home base'.

so true, I change my mind often ... it depends what you're doing at the time to ... if you've got a weeks traveling ahead you'll wish for the Air ... if you're going to be doing kitchen table computing maybe a 17" ... LOL...

Don't make a snap decision. Think about it for at least a month.

I'm of the school that the MBP 15 is the absolute perfect size for a laptop, so you're not going to find any help coming from my corner ;-).

That might be the case for your needs, and there's nothing wrong with that. Just keep in mind that it may not meet other people's needs.

I got a 13" MBP and it's absolutely perfect for me. I didn't want to lug around a larger notebook having come from a 15".
