Has anybody had Apple service an unlocked iPhone?

I bought an Iphone because I was able to unlock it and use local sim cards when I travel (so that people can REACH ME easily, as opposed to calling a US number - in many place I go, calling abroad is not an option).

To be honest, I didn't think too much about warranty issues when I got it a few days ago, but now that I've noticed that my battery life is very poor (got about 8 hours of very light use yesterday - maybe 1hr talk, 30 mins internet with wifi and a few email checks), I started thinking about the warranty situation and am worried that Apple won't honor the hardware warranty because I software unlocked it. If this is the case, I'm sadly going to return it since I can't afford to not have warranty on a product like this.

My sim card is from the old At&t and the plan is so good that I don't want to get a new plan that is less favorable to me. If I brought the phone in with the iphone sim card, it would show that it isn't activated and I wouldn't be able to demonstrate the problem....

Anyway, has anybody had their iphone fixed under warranty while not being activated by ATT? Or does anybody know anything else about Apple's official stance on this? Or any workarounds if I needed service?

not so much of an answer but i assume you have checked that wifi and bluetooth are switched off when your not using it.

Yes, I turned bluetooth off and wireless was only on when I was using it and maybe a little more. I'm following a tip now to turn off wifi while I charge to see if that helps to get a full charge. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the battery or if it's a firmware/software issue.

    thanks though for the suggestion.

I guess if worse came to worse I could activate the phone on the new ATT, go to apple to get service and then cancel my service with ATT quickly.....hardly a good solution though.

I don't think you have a problem with your battery... Its like that at first for everyone... The battery life improves significantly the more and more you use the thing... Give it time.

thanks for the re-assurance. It already looks better after I charged it in airplane mode with signals switched off. Before that, the usage and standby indicators just showed a line, now they're functioning properly and the small battery icon is not moving as quickly. Good to know that many others have this same issue in the beginning.

I think the battery life seems to vary from phone to phone really. I have had mine go as long as about 50 hours without a charge, including 5+ hours or so of actual use in there. I can't go quite that long anymore, but I noticed a few things that kill the battery fast. First, make sure you have auto brightness off. This will save battery by not having the screen way too bright when you don't need it. Second turn bluetooth off unless you are using it. Third thing is that surfing on EDGE at all quickly drains the battery life. I use WiFi as often as possible and will even wait to check something if I know I am going to have wifi soon. I would give your phone a few weeks of playing around with before saying the battery is bad.

So I got the usage and standby gauge working, but it's all strange. I charged it last night with airplane mode on and when I checked it this morning, it said it had been in use for 9 hours and the old call time was still showing (before the charge). Any ideas how to get it working accurately?

Where did you charge it? The battery will drain if you charge it over an asleep computer.

Sorry, I charged it with the adapter. It;s not that it has drained, but rather that the display of usage/standby info doesn't show. It's been charging all night, yet shows that it's been in use during that period. Sometimes the information seems accurate though, but then suddenly it will stop showing anything. Seems like some kind of software bug to me...
