After reviewing the Best Buy return policies, it doesn't look like they'll accept returns based on scratches. Of course, this will no doubt vary from store to store, depending on how symathetic the employees are, and how smooth of a talker you are.

Either way, I'm still trying to buff the scratches out. I went by O'Reilly Auto Parts and looked at all the products they had for polishing. I bought one and tried it, but no imporvement. I might make the treck to Wal-Mart today, and see about a can of Brasso.

Well, it will cost them more than you think. It will cost them time to replace and clean the unit (service techs get good money ya know) before then ATTEMPTING to resale a USED iPod at a DISCOUNTED price. If they resale it, they automatically lose $50-150 bucks. I don't know about you, but that's not mere change, especially when you consider the many many people who needlessly return their iPods.

Most toothpastes have grit in them to help clean your teeth. Did it not seem logical that the grit would scratch your screen?

Because of apple's high mark up (50%), they don't lose any money for returned product. They charge 10% restocking fee up front and they still make money by selling it again at a discounted price.

I stepped on my ipod and apple gave me a new one

The other day I came home and I had to go to the bathroom reallly bad and I laid my jacket on the floor. I didn't remenber that I had by 1 week old video ipod in my pocket of the jacket. So I walked on the jacket becaue I tripped on something and I dented the back of the ipod. . It wasn't really bad only a small soft dent. . I was so angry and I took it back to the apple store and they looked at it and they gave me a new ipod

Good luck navigating the rest of your life, it sounds like you may have many more anger inducing incidents ahead of you.
Just hope I don't end up on the same highway as you while you're having a moment!

14 days (mine are up tomorrow), and you'll have to pay a 10% (if you opened it) restocking fee, which is $30...
Depends on the country. UK law states that if an item is faulty within 28 days of purchase, (barring due to accidents), you can take it back to the store you purchased it for an exchange or refund. No money is to be paid. If there is nothing wrong with it, the retailer can take up to 20% off the refund price to allow for costs of selling it on used. If you take it back to any store in the UK complaining of minor scratches, expect to be greeted with nothing in the way of a full refund, this is not considered a fault. If you aren't satisfied, you can take it up with apple directly.

I know few that have tried to bring back nanos due to scratches, but have had a few returned due to cracked screens. One guy was stupid enough to take it out his pocket after he had taken his keys and phone out. It was quite obvious from that point something had pushed up against the screen and cracked it, so no refund. Just be careful what you are returning it for.

Yeah!!! To mess something up and get it replaced only due to your own CLUMSINESS is just INSANE!! Perhaps I'm getting too fired up over this issue, but geez...I couldn't ever go back to a store and hold a straight face trying to return a product that I messed up! What happened to accepting responsibility for your own idiocy??? For example, I bought an iBook a few years ago. I plugged it in to charge it, we got a really wicked power surge that blasted the screen. I was stupid for not putting it on a surge protector. Do you think I went running to Apple whining about something that wasn't the original issue?? No. I accepted that I was DUMB and didn't take proper care of my treasured possesion. I just couldn't, in good conscience, make a claim that I wasn't fully entitled to. Well, when the chips are REALLY down and these people have to deal with more serious issues, karma will come to bite them in the arse.

You guys should quit complaining

Quit complaining about hairline scratches on your 5Gs. Be a real man/woman and use a 1st generation. I have had mine since they first came out in 2001 and it's still chugging along. It has had tons of abuse too. Fallen out of my pocket onto the road while rollerblading, dropped a longboard on top of it:eek:, which gave it a nice grip-tape texture on the top next to the hold switch and headphone jack and a big dent on the bottom metal because it was on a stand, spilled Coke on it(I took it apart and cleaned it after), landed on it many times while crashing skiing, and other things. Sure it looks beat up, it's scratched, and it's only five gigs. But who cares, it works better than any other iPod I have seen. (and it has firewire:cool: )
