Had this thing for a while now and baby it more than my old computer. I often bring my old Macbook Air places because I don't care if it gets damaged, but about to do some travelling and thinking of taking this because its such a better machine. Wondering if anyone has cracked the screen or damaged it from moving it about? Not gonna wrap the thing in cotton wool but would be good to know if there's any weak points so I can make sure I minimise the impact

Has anyone damaged their M1 16" yet?

I think for me, I always babied my MBP and so I generally avoiding bringing it into harms way. That being the case, when I went to sell my laptops, they tended to be in pristine condition.
Given the cost of the 16" MBP, I would definitely go with what @pshufd stated and get a solid backpack that protects the MBP. Plus be aware of your surroundings so you don't put the MBP in unnecessary risk
For sure, have a great backpack with a sleeve for it, based off there being no replies with actual damage I think I'm good to go and start living with this bad boy more and let Apple care take care of anything that does arise. Let's go

I recall a post in the forum not long ago from someone who had "cracked" the display.
Seems he always opened it by pulling the lid up FROM THE CORNER -- rather than from "the middle" (where the notch exists in the lower case for you to grab it).
Just something to be aware of.
IF you get a backpack, BE SURE that when the backpack is loaded, there isn't any "pressure" on the laptop -- from either side.

Yeah that's my main concern - that I chuck it in an overhead locker on a plane or something and the pressure gets to the screen. But I feel like we'd have heard about it by now, it's a huge issue with the wedge Macbook Airs.
Also I'm not sure why they opened it from the corner, I always open from the middle so should be all good there
I've been using laptops since 1999. Never needed a hard case. Just a good backpack. The Swissgear Carbon has a suspension system to prevent damage from sudden drops and has a well-padded laptop compartment. You just have to take reasonable care with it.
Yes, and to reduce the force of any bumps at the corners. Corners are where the glass is weakest.
That's where the opening is so it is easiest to open it from there. I'm not even sure how you'd open it from the corner.
This is true of all of the laptops I've owned. My old 2008 MacBook Pro had a button in the center that you pushed to release the hook.
I disagree. The majority of people using MBPs in backpacks don’t use hard shell cases and damage is exceedingly rare. At some point you have to just live your life.
I use a leather sleeve laptop case with zipper that I used to use with a 2012 retina 15" MBP, the 2021 16" MBP is the same dimensions. Then to further protect I stick it in a briefcase if I go traveling. Yes the sleeve laptop case fits inside easily. Here's a recent BB sample.

As long as you have a decent quality padded sleeve and a sturdy backpack with a proper laptop compartment (I love for example the shock absorbing design found in Wenger/Swissgear models), you should be good.
Hardshell case is optional, I use one mainly because dents, scratches and dings tend to bother me but it's not indispensable.
