I'm in talks with a local dealership to have a new car delivered to me. I have never done this before.

I know it is becoming more and more popular, and was wondering if anyone has ever done it.

I'm 99.999% sure I'm going to love it, but don't want to make a mistake.

I've seen plenty of photos, videos, virtual stuff- the car is amazing.

Delivery is all the rage these days, especially now with COVID. Personally I use DoorDash, but that's mainly because they have a tie-in with my credit card. Just remember to tip your delivery guy.

Yeah I know! Groceries, restaurant food, supplies, it’s all about delivery right now.

Maybe even a car for me haha

Let me clarify this then. You’re negotiating a car purchase from a local dealership and part of the agreement is it is brought to you rather than picking it up personally. And you’re soliciting advice from others on this? What are your looking for? If they were prompt?

Now asking for advice on an online purchase seems reasonable but isn’t what you’re doing fairly traditional?

Anyway, in the spirit of helping, yes. The last several cars have been purchased that way. Let me know if you need any input on the dealership picking up and returning your car for service.

Ive buying it without seeing it person though

I think I am confused here.....why would, as he has already indicated, the OP be so willing to go out to bars and to other places to meet up with friends and strangers now that apparently those places are opened up again in his area, risking exposure to COVID-19 from an unknown source, and yet rather than go to a local car dealership (which probably has had very little walk-in traffic for a while) to look at and test-drive cars before making a decision and purchase (or lease) he is considering the option of delivery to him from a local dealership?

Does this delivery of the as-of-yet-unseen vehicle to his home allow for the prospective buyer/leaser to spend some time with the car and test-drive it, etc., before making a final decision on purchase or lease? How much time? Does the prospective buyer or leaser have to make any sort of deposit? I've seen those ads on TV, too, and am wondering just how it all works out in real time......

Prices on new cars, both for purchase and lease deals are great right now, and that is certainly a big temptation -- car dealers are hurting and they want to unload their inventory, keep their businesses going. For the customer, there are undoubtedly some terrific deals to be had, if one has the funds or good credit at hand as well as inclination and motivation to move forward with a great deal.....

I'm driving an increasingly-elderly Acura RSX right now and I have to admit that this does sure seem like a good time for making the change to a brand-new Acura with all the latest features and functions, but I for one just can't wrap my head around the idea of having the dealership arrive on my doorstep (well, in the condo parking lot) with a shiny new vehicle and saying, "take her away, test drive her, do what you want!" Surely there is some catch to all of this?

Aside from that, I really prefer the idea of being in the dealership's showroom and looking at all the models, all the specs, and taking a test drive in at least a couple of different cars and models before making a decision as to which one will be part of my life for a number of years. Reading about them, looking at their photos online, well, that's only part of the entire picture as far as I am concerned. I need to actually look at the various vehicles in person, drive one or two or more, mull over and discuss the options and special packages offered. That's just me, though......

It's really all about priorities.

For me, my social life is a must.

As far as buying a new car, I drive a 2019 LX with less 5,000 miles so I definitely don't NEED a new car.

I just want it because I'm getting a great deal

I never go in & pick up my new cars from the dealership. I always drive a Mercedes to work and have to have latest and greatest, so I get the low paid peasants to drop mine off every year. I mean, who wants a car that's more than 1 year old? Plus, you know how the famous saying goes, "If it has more 1,000 miles on the clock, it ain't no good for me".

I just spend a few mins online every year browsing the Mercedes website and ask a few questions on a Sony tv forum before making my choice. Then I make a phone call to place the order while I'm at work. Not sure I could manage to fit a phone call into my social life for something as trivial as buying a new car (be thankful I'm making time to respond).

It's only if I'm driving by the dealership and notice a hot girl in the showroom I'll want to pick it up in person.

MX5 delivered to my office on a 1 car trailer outside the main door on a busy street in Glasgow. Lots of people going in and out and walking past looking at me enviously. I felt like a million £££ though was slightly embarrassed.

Yeah I was thinking about getting G Wagen but after extensive research the Range Rover HSE is a more luxurious ride. Coming from a Lexus the G Wagen might a bit too rough around the edges as my daily driver.

Plus since I was 16 I’ve driven 5 cars. Three of them Mercedes and 2 Lexus.

So it’s time for a change
[automerge]1589098772[/automerge]
What is MX-5? Sounds like a military jet or something lol @sundialsoft
[automerge]1589099530[/automerge]
PLUS, I’m getting a deal on the HSE. Haven’t been able to find one on the G Wagen which isn’t that surprising I guess.

Thats actually the only reason I’m getting it.

The new G-Wagon is much improved over the older model. Despite the similar look, it’s a totally different car. That said, the Range Rover is probably still the more practical choice.

If you allegedly have a 2019 Lexus LX, why would you buy another full size SUV? The LX/Land Cruiser is a great car, especially given their tremendous reliability and resale track record. It’s too bad their tech is so dated. Makes for a tough sell, not the car to have if you want the latest tech.

Sure you can get more powerful engine with the G and RR, but why bother if you already have a GX. If you’re looking for more power, get, why not something that’s actually fun to drive?

Ah, an excellent post, and one that had me in stitches of laughter.

Thank you for articulating so eloquently the striking contradiction (a desire to take advantage of a relaxation in regulations, recommendations, and health requirements, in order to be able to socialise in bars and clubs yet rather worried about contracting Covid-19 should he visit a car dealership to personally inspect a car he wished to purchase) at the core of the OP's premise in this thread.

A week ago I moved from Hawai'i to NY State, near Ithaca. I didn't bring my Toyota 4Runner because there's really no work for it here (as opposed to on the Big Island, where I used its off-road abilities all the time).

Having had a BMW 3-series wagon 13 years ago, I wanted an X1, which brings me to my point.

I negotiated everything online, had just the one I wanted built, and it showed up at the dealership in Syracuse more than a month ago.

I made an appointment to pick it up, again via email before I got here. The dealership's rule was that an associate could spend 30 mins max with a customer when a car was picked up.

I turned in my rental car at SYR, and a masked friend drove me to the dealership.

The dealership was locked; I called and they let me in. Everybody was masked. I signed the necessary papers, keeping social distance across a desk.

Got the keys, went outside with the associate. The seats were covered, the steering wheel and shifter had -- what to call them -- surgical caps -- on them, which I removed.

And drove away. Total time near and in the dealership was probably about 20 minutes.

I felt considerably less at risk than when I go to the supermarket (yes! Wegman's!).

Well some people actually value people over material possessions like me.

I drive a Lexus LX and while I get plenty of hate, IMO it’s nice. Not as nice as the Range I get that, or a G Wagen but Lexus ALWAYS gives you a lot.

For example, there’s really no such thing as a base Lexus. You get wood trim, perforated leather, beautiful audio, quality paint and many, many other technological features.

If you want air conditioned seats, radar cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, it’s not even that much more.

For G you can spend like 5K on a paint.

You can hold off on the Range despite getting a great deal, but your friends are everything. I would say my girlfriend is everything but not yet haha still too early to talk that deep. Your friends are your family. At least mine are and I’m lucky for that.

I’m gonna talk to dealership today and see what we can work out.

I am NOT gonna risk corona for a car I don’t need. No way. So they better have some solutions if they want a sale.

*Tomorrow. Today’s Sunday 😂

I’ve totally lost track of time.
[automerge]1589110462[/automerge]
@monokakata Thanks for sharing your experience!!

I want them to deliver mine, but then I’d probably leave it for a few days or so to help make sure the corona is gone.

I don’t want to return it. You know what a headache that would be? That would be like a nightmare.

For me it’s a 1 time deal. I don’t even want to test drive bc the guy who brings it could have corona unless they leave it with me for a few days so I can let it air out then drive it for a day. Even then I’m skeptical.

We’ll just have to see what ideas they have

So, let me get this right, or straight:

You are not "gonna risk corona for a car" - in a dealership where they are very much more than likely to practice "social/physical distancing", and implement and execute appropriate health and safety and sanitary measures and precautions and protocols - but you are quite happy,- if not perfectly happy? - to risk contracting Covid-19 in bars and clubs that have opened - once quarantined measures have been lifted - because you want to socialise with your friends?

I should also note, if we’re being honest...

G Wagen > RR 😂

They’re not really in the same league if you ask me, from the standpoint of the 63
[automerge]1589110796[/automerge]
Not the 550. But I think if you’re gonna get a G it HAS to be the 63. I don’t know anyone who gets the 550 and I don’t blame them. If you’re gonna go G you gotta go all out, and that’s my opinion

I'll give a second shout out to Wegman's (doing a great job during crazy times.) You'll love Ithaca, and I'm very familiar with the Auto Group you purchased your BMW from.

They will treat you like a King.

Now I'm really confused...
In another thread you are all gung-ho and ready to charge out and face the world.
And now you are staying at home and making a major purchase "sight unseen" because you are concerned about exposure to covid 19.
Which is it?

I'd suspect is the real purpose of this thread is in post #12, but same, yes, same here, I've done this a few times.

I've purchased new cars out of state and had them shipped to my door (MD to FL), only seen through photos/videos, in fact, I didn't even drive the exact configuration before buying, I tend to "get" cars, I knew what to expect. There was an option for a local dealer to support the delivery, I said no thanks.

Kind of peripheral to the door-delivery, but in the same "taking delivery of a new car without seeing it first", I've done special museum delivery on a car, flew to the location, toured, drove it home 800 miles - didn't drive this car or the model variant in advance (I did see it live on camera during the trip up). Our last family ride, we completed everything remotely, actually stopped by the dealership that was an hour into a trip, finished up, swapped cars, drive away with the new one :)

It's no big deal. ;)

Yeah I mean it wouldn’t be worth it at all for the new car.

I’m just getting a great deal otherwise I don’t even need one

Why take the risk when you already have a car??
[automerge]1589144673[/automerge]
Have car delivered to minimize risk of coronavirus. Drive said car to clubs and bars to socialize. It's funny how the OP can see the rationale in this but nobody else can. 🤔

It’s all about What you prioritize.

People risk going grocery shopping...
