Has anyone here ever bought 2 + routers to compare them then sold the ones you didn't want as used or is this a waste of time?

It compares and tests various routers. Your location may have specific demands (distance, wall thickness, etc) but it should help narrow down your search before spending time and money yourself.

As a retired network administrator I can Sure to say use the 5 channels in higher channels numbers in 5 GHz range, well into the 120 range!

I stopped thinking about WiFi coverage ever since I bought a mesh WiFi system. Was a great purchase.

Yes, I have done that same test.
But I have ended up returning the routers that didn't make the cut.

Whatever you see on "paper" does not mean it will work with your wireless environment.

There are so many variables that a router tested in a perfect no obstruction, limited number of device concurrent connections = will not work the same for you.
