Has anyone received and email from ATT about Tethering

    I received this email on May 3, I have never used tethering , and I was wondering if anyone also received this message. :confused: Thanks

    Thanks We've noticed your service plan may need updating.
    Many AT&T customers use their smartphones as a broadband connection for other devices, like laptops, netbooks or other smartphones - a practice commonly known as tethering. Tethering can be an efficient way for our customers to enjoy the benefits of AT&T's mobile broadband network and use more than one device to stay in touch with important people and information. To take advantage of this feature, we require that in addition to a data plan, you also have a tethering plan.

    Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan.

    If you would like to continue tethering, please log into your account online at www.wireless.att.com, or call us at 1-866-679-7118 Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. CST or Saturday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. CST, by May 13, 2011 to sign up for DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering. Here are details on the plan:

    DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering
    • $45 per month
    (this gives you 4GB in total, combining both your smartphone data plan for $25 and the tethering feature, $20)
    • $10 per each additional GB thereafter, added automatically as needed
    • Mobile Hotspot capabilities are included for compatible Smartphones
    If we don't hear from you, we'll plan to automatically enroll you into DataPro 4GB after May 13, 2011. The new plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan.

    If you discontinue tethering, no changes to your current plan will be required.

    I got the email yesterday as well. Do you have unlimited data?

    I haven't tethered since Feb. I got the continued to tether message today. My phone is not jail broken either.

    I have unlimited data and I've been tethering for well over 6 months now and I have yet to receive an email. Monthly I use about 2 to 3gb's

    Haven't gotten the message, but I only tether infrequently. It sounds like AT&T is cracking down on it. Which tethering app were you all using when you got the message?

    To answer the question yes I have never used tethering and from what I am reading today it seems ATT says that using slingplayer is considered tethering so I guess that is why I am getting this e mail and today i received a text message saying that I am continuing to enjoy tethering. So I think ATT is doing this to get rid of everyone's unlimited data plan. :mad:

    I have been running slingplayer and not even watching it.

    I have been wanting out of my 2 line contract for a long time (but dont want to pay two ETFs). If they change my plan for watching slingplayer then thats the bait and switch and I am in my rights to demand out of my contract. I actually will also charge them for their braking the contract (thats a whole different story, and may not work) but the first part will.

    I thunk it's just some bs bluff att is trying to pull. I used to tether, don't anymore. And my wife never tethered. But today she got a text saying:

    "AT&T Free Msg: We've noticed you're continuing to enjoy the tethering feature with your smartphone service. Remember, you need a tethering plan ($45/mo, incl. 4GB) to use this feature, so we're planning to update your line with the required plan soon. Visit att.com/dataplans or call 866-679-7118."

    It's a bunch of crap. They're just trying to get people on the phone. If they change my plan, I will call them, tell them to shove it and sign up at verizon.

    Yes I do have an unlimited plan. and have never used tethering.

    You're not going to get out of paying the ETF. In the contract they have the right to change your plan whenever they want. Otherwise everyone who put their sim in an iphone and got a data plan automatically added would get out of the ETF.
