Are they any grippier than the original ones, which were far too slippery, thus defeating one of the arguments for using a case on the too-slippery iPhones?

Depending on the size of one's hand, just palm the iphone and grip it with your fingers on the side. Most any case I have used I have to do that or the iPhone would be too slippery regardless no matter which one. Grant it some would be better than others but still.

The leather cases for the 6 series were grippy. It can be done.

Yes, got the Sapphire color, really awesome. Also, the leather feels better now, softer and more consistent looking.

Which iPhone do you have? Looked at sapphire, thought a different color would look better on my jet black.

I never had anything on it but a clear case. Can't teach an old dog. :)

I got a Gold iPhone 7 Plus, i'll try to post some pics tonight.

Jet Black would look good with Sapphire as well.

Thank you. I wonder whether just the new ones are different (fixed the slipperiness issue) or whether they redid them all?

There no different to me. I use a blue leather one on my 7 Plus and the texture is exactly the same as the previous iterations.

Has the leather held up better from the previous versions? I had one in my iPhone 6, i didn't bother for my 6S plus as the leather wore away fairly quickly IMO.

Well considering the price difference I would hope the Apple ones would be second :p

True ;)
I look at it as I am getting a quality "does what I want" addition for my device.

Honestly, I tried the Apple leather and was not impressed.
Went looking elsewhere and eventually ended up with Vaja. Using the back skin atm ...
