Each and every PowerBook / MacBook Pro I've had to date, I've added the memory myself. Mainly because I can save significant money that way.
.
I was shocked to find, when I configured my CTO Core i7, that Apples price for the 8GB ram upgrade, was less than what I could buy the ram for myself. Then to make it sweeter is the fact that it's part of the original purchase and all covered by the AppleCare warranty I always buy.

It's a win/win scenario.

Macbook Pro memory upgrade price

I'm a bit confused as to why there seems to be a consensus that buying memory elsewhere and installing it yourself is much cheaper than choosing that option at the time of buying the computer from Apple. All the 8gb upgrades I see cost around $320-400, and with education pricing, I can get it from Apple for $360 as an add-on. Am I missing something?

Because up until 7 weeks ago when Apple finally realised that their RAM rip-off prices were not selling well and the amount of complaints Apple ram was double the price it was you see today.

8gb ram kits are now $249 shipped

I vote for OWC as well, I used them to upgrade my current 2006 13" Macbook to 2GB RAM and a 200GB HD. I just ordered a 15" i7 with 4gb and will probably upgrade to 8GB eventually. I was looking at the prices on these sites and was shocked to see 350-400 on newegg, while its 250 and they'll give you $50 for your old 4GB of ram. Just sayin'

Got G. Skill 4GB x 2 from Newegg for ~$90.
Helps a lot with VM running Win7.
Definitely worth it...
