Is it an effective alternative to restoring from a backup?

The ATT app will only transfer your contacts, pictures, and videos. Restoring from backup will not only get your contacts, pictures, and videos, but also restore all of your settings, apps, and app data.

I always set up as new it gives me a chance to put the new devices thru it's paces and see how well it works.
