has anyone used the PCIe slot in their imac for something other than an ssd?

Just curious. Technically there's a SATA slot that could be used for a hard drive so you could have an empty PCIe slot. Can you do anything fun with that?

I would not recommend adding new hardware in the already too thin iMac. I am not sure if you are aware of image retention but you should read up on it before considering adding more heat in an iMac
