I think the iPhone Air is a brilliant design, with a few noticeable compromises. Though the compromises do not bother me. In fact, had I not purchased the 16e this past February, I would have certainly purchased the Air this go around.

Anyway, I know it's a ways off down the road. But I have started thinking whether Apple will be releasing a new Air next year. After all, they did not name it the iPhone 17 Air, so it's at least worth wondering if the Air will be updated every year going forward. However, assuming Apple does have plans to update it, then it's worth noting that they would already be well into the preliminary design phase right now.

With that in mind, I have to wonder if Apple has painted themselves into a bit of a corner here. In other words, where can they go with the design.

It cannot really get much thinner I wouldn't think. After all, Apple really just barely had enough room for the battery in the body of the current Air. Making it thinner next go around would mean a smaller battery, which would compromise on the already somewhat poor battery performance it has now. I mean I suppose they could stretch the Air length and width wise to accommodate another battery, but that would make the device heavier, which again defeats one of its major selling points. Besides it's hard to believe they would release an Air 2.0 that is heavier than the current one.

The next Air could add an additional camera, as that is another compromise on this current version, but again how? If you believe Apple, there was absolutely no room to put a second camera in the current Air. Which means again, we are back to having to stretch the phone in order to get another camera in it. If Apple does add another camera without making the next Air bigger, it's kinda going to look like they lied by omitting it on this current version.

Yes camera and sensor technology improve each year, and I suppose Apple could make the one-single fusion camera more versatile, but I believe it would still draw many of the same criticisms that this current Air is facing. A lot of people again found the one camera to be a deal breaker.

It's really hard to imagine what else Apple could do with the Air design, without compromising its two biggest selling points, thinness and weight. Apple really can't improve to much, in terms of hardware, on the next Air, without making it bigger and somewhat bulkier. Which again would defeat the purpose of the Air's original concepts. Which is why I wonder if we will see another Air.

I don't believe that we will. It's just hard to see where Apple can go with the design. Almost anything they add or change, hardware wise, is going to compromise on its form. And that is its major selling point.

I am not bashing Apple's engineers at all. I am just intrigued to see where they can go with the design.

Look at Samsung edge, I fully expect dual cameras and probably 2 speakers next year. They can use improved battery technology or more efficient chip/smaller battery but same battery life, etc.

the air is the new pro

that is probably the meta shift that we will see unfold with air 2, air 3, etc.

apple is already signaling this by using the premium materials and colors for the air. this is what they expect to happen bc the technology is so mature that thin, light, unobtrusive design and packaging will be viewed as superior as decadence in society will become too distasteful. the drawbacks of the air is exactly what will make it the new pro.

Yeah I mean obviously Apple would like to add dual cameras and 2 speakers like the Samsung Edge currently has. But again how do you get there without violating the current concept of the devices form. I am not saying that they can't add these things, but I am more intrigues as to how and what the form factor would look like.

The only people talking about compromises are spec chasers and those who are used to the pro / pro max and weren't really going to get the Air in the first place.

The Air isn't going anywhere and will slowly continue to evolve just like many of the other products. Many people here need to get rid of their look at me I use "pro" hang ups.

The public at large is looking primarily at the design of the phone and does it look different than what others have. The Air does that. The Air can play and record social media, YouTube, What's app, games and all the other mindless drivel kids today waste their time with, along with general email and web surfing. They aren't coming up with excuses couched in the word 'compromise' because their Apple ego can't handle doing something different than others.

Yes the S25 Edge I bought upon their release has been impressive. I am _not_ advocating for Samsung as I am deeply immersed in the Apple ecosystem, just sharing my experience.

On launch day I visited the Apple Store intending to purchase an iPhone Air for my other line.

However I found it more of a compromise than anticipated. Willing to overlook battery life and excuse that it only has one camera, it was the poor sound from the monotone speaker that caused second thoughts. Although often I use ear buds there are times when I don’t.

There’s room for improvement therefore I will wait until the next version comes.

I have an Air myself in space black and can whole heartedly say that I love this iPhone, the way it feels in your hand, the way it looks, how it performs.

Sure it has some compromises but they do not take anything away from my experiences.

I’m excited to see where Apple takes the Air’s evolution in the future & I shall be sticking with this new addition to the iPhone family going forward ❤️

The building blocks are now in place for innovation and engineering leaps for the whole iPhone line up in the years to come.

The S25 Edge is barely thicker and heavier than the Air but with dual cameras and stereo speakers. There is plenty for Apple to improve on.

But how is my question? Of course there is plenty of things for them to improve on. That's not what I am asking. I am saying how can they add another camera for example without making the next Air bigger than the current one. If they add another camera while not increasing its size then it's going to fly in the face of the reasons Apple gave for not having a second camera in this current Air.

Not really, Apple doesn't release a version 1 of a product without plans for version 2. Just not the way they operate. The second version of the product is usually much improved, easy to see them adding space for camera or speaker or both. There is new high density batteries some companies starting to use, etc. They already know, we just don't.

And this I could see. I am not saying there will not be another Air, certainly that is likely true. I suppose they could keep current form factor, keep it just as thin and light and rely on new battery technology. I still question whether they would be able to add another speaker or camera though, if the goal is to stay true to the current form over function.

Apple engineers are good. I will give them their due. Just wondering in my head how they will be able to make the next Air more appealing either for current Air owners who would be looking to upgrade or those who were on the fence this year.

Its already been done.

S25 Edge: (158.2 x 75.6 x 5.8 mm) 163 grams.
iPhone Air: (156.2 × 74.7 × 5.64 mm) 165 grams.

If Samsung can do it, so can Apple.

Yeah but the Edge is already bigger than the Air though. Not by much, but still slightly bigger. The Edge is slightly lighter due to composite aluminum that it uses for its frame.

My contention at this point is that Apple will have to make the next Air slightly bigger, at least matching the dimensions of the Edge, while keeping the weight ideally the same as it is currently, if they are going to squeeze another camera in there.

Or Apple would have to ditch titanium frame of the current Air and switch to Aluminum to save weight and I can't see them doing that, since Titanium was another huge selling point for the current Air.

I guess they could try to a different camera layout, but it would be interesting to see how they could approach that.

I am not saying that they cannot make it work, just that it would likely involve a compromise of at least of one of the major selling points of the current Air.

These two devices are essentially identical. I think Apple can add onto the hardware while keeping it super thin and light. Not a concern.

Not really. A solution already exists. Apple just hasn’t caught up to the rest of the phone world to use it yet.

There are 200MP sensors now. The S25 Edge actually uses one. Apple can theoretically put a single ultra wide lens (18mm?) on top of that sensor and the phone will then be able to accommodate the following focal lengths easily:

18mm: 200MP
36mm: 50MP
72mm: 12.5MP

One camera, 3 of the current popular focal lengths, and technically higher resolution overall.

Also an ultra wide lens at 18mm will allow for Macro mode again as well. Technically, it means this next phone should support everything except for the extreme telephoto lens on the 17 Pro Max.

If they use this sensor, there is absolutely zero compromise they need to make, other than maybe a bit more processing power needed for final image.

With that out of the way, I also believe the next Air will have a bigger battery… at the exact same thickness. How? There’s quite a bit of space taken up by extra parts to protect the integrity of the phone. The part Apple overcompensated on was durability. So I guess you are right that perhaps some compromise is needed, but durability is definitely something they can compromise on. They went way overboard with durability this round. Even Jerry was surprised.

Fold should be coming, the price will be shocking.
