I think they need to refocus it on notifications and few things it does well and stop the direction of "full apps running on it". Perhaps a re-think on that whole "apps view" thing too...

I'll always be out on these products until the battery life gets better. If that means just waiting for tech, so be it....But I think they could move in that direction by hyper focusing on the things it can do really well right now.

I do not think Apple sold quite as well as Apple had hoped but they are looking long term.

I am disappointed in the lack of apps and do not think that will change. Apple left it up to the developers and they seem to have little interest

I think some of them are just put off about what a picky lot we can be! :D

Seriously though...I think it's hard to make a really good watch app. Some developers have shown that it is possible to make watch apps that are reliable, reasonably fast, and provide just the right amount of information and interaction.... but that last bit will always be subjective. I don't think the watch will ever be a platform for lots of apps. Most of the apps on my iPhone are apps I just don't need on my watch. For some of the apps I did want on my watch, I had to try a few options before settling on the ones with the best watch & iPhone apps.

I only use a handful of watch apps on a regular basis, but when I do find a new apps that looks interesting I always give the watch app a try if they offer one (why not?). Many watch apps seem to be afterthoughts... just so they can say they offer a watch app. It seems like the core apps that inspire competition among the best developers are for things like calendar, weather, tasks, fitness, short-form communication and news, etc.

I think smartwatches will become more common as they get better and cheaper, and there will be more reasons to wear one. We have replaced a lot of our lights at home with Philips Hue smart LED lights. These are usually controlled from a smartphone, but you can also get smart-switches for them that you put on the wall. Of course I can just use my watch to turn the lights off/on or dim them. Hey Siri works as well, but I usually just use the watch app because it seems convenient to me. Imagine much more a smartwatch will do as our appliances get smarter as well? Our laundry is in the basement. I want a watch app that tells me how much time is left on the wash or dry cycles!

In the end I suppose it depends on how you define success! I personally believe it is within the measure I use. It does what it was advertised to do. It works for my needs.

Apple may look at it differently, but my opinion is they see this as a start of a new chapter in expanding their portfolio, and are probably pleased with the way it's going so far.

If your focus on success is that it will sell as much as the iPhone etc. I think you should look at your expectations and wonder if they are set on the wrong side of reality!

The only correct answer is that no one outside of Apple's top executives knows right now. Anyone replying with any other answer is just talking out of their behind.

Count the success in $$$? or in lives saved? Apple does report the huge growth in the “other” category, of which a large part comes from the Apple Watch profits. There have been quite a few stories about people’s lives saved too.

I think so!

Apple has made a lot of changes people care about over the years, increased the screen size and shrunk bezels to look more modern and I like the crown ticking when you scroll, they nailed customization with the easily replaceable bands (and successfully monetized the hell out of it), its a great device when you are charging your phone but wanna stay connected, its great when youre lazy sometimes and dont want to take your phone out & just check a notification or two..

from a market share standpoint, they are the de facto smartwatch.

Actually quite impressed overall it was originally my only planned upgrade for the year (series 1 to 4) until XR sucked me in as well

I just wish they opened up letting people add custom animated faces and complications, not just static images overlaid. Seems unnecessary to keep that locked down now that the Apple watch brand has been solidifed. I get it, apple are control freaks, but customization is the name of the game.

When this thread was created, 3 years ago I don't think the watch was really a success. Routinely people and friends would ask about it and no one saw the point. Many thought it was just a complete waste of money.... Now turn the clock forward 3 years and I think it has been a huge success. When I was walking around the city I saw tons of them. Many of the friends who thought it was dumb back then have hopped on board and love it too. Kind of reminds me of AirPods and the reaction I got when I first got them. Now everyone has them. Just takes people awhile to warm up to new things I think.

As much as Apple is beginning to struggle with the iPhone, their Watch is a total hit. So far, they have left the competition in the dust.

The only downside for that market for wearables is nowhere as big as the market for the phones.

Simple I use the timer on the watch all the time. :)

I use the timer app as well... mostly for cooking, but our washer and dryer only estimate time remaining so a simple timer doesn’t help much. It can vary since the dryer has a sensor to tell when clothes are dry. Our washer also estimates. Sometimes it say 10 minutes remaining, but it will actually take 15 or 20.
