Not even the latest iPhone 16 Pros are able to handle it well. And on my old XS Max it’s extremely buggy slow and has horrendous battery life compared to iOS 17.

Even iPhone 6S on its last supported OS runs much better than this nightmare called iOS 18.
It’s funny because I don’t even have Apple Intelligence turned on.

And the XS is still a very powerful phone on iOS 17 it was extremely smooth and buttery with amazing battery life and the newest 16 Pro is almost unusable for a brand new latest iPhone. It’s like trying to run Windows Vista on Nintendo 64 hardware.

I am not over exaggerating either. It’s that bad when it comes to stability battery speed bugs 😤 everything is wrong with iOS 18.

I have not shared your experience. With the exception of the interactive Siri “feature” I consider iPadOS 18 to be fast, stable, and reliable. Battery life is at minimum as good as promised (probably it’s a whole lot better but I haven’t tried to keep track of it). I am pretty much completely satisfied with my mini 7.

Same story, different year.

I think you’re definitely exaggerating, partly cuz we can’t recall what it’s like a year ago exactly. Every major iOS release has bugs. Some years are worse than others, depending on the feature set. I’ve run every x.0 beta and have been on 13P since launch, and iOS 18 doesn’t feel any worse.
If you think this is the worst, you must’ve forgotten the disasters that were iOS 7, 11, and 13.
iOS 11 in particular was so bad that Apple basically had to release iOS 12 focusing on just optimization and they aren’t known for their candor.

Have you used some of the older iOS versions on the oldest supported devices? iOS 6 on an iPod Touch 4G, iOS 7 on an iPhone 4, iOS 9 on the iPhone 4s, iPad 2, and iPod Touch 5G?

With a little luck and hope, those will forever be the worst iOS versions for older devices. iOS 11 was an absolute disaster, too. This is not even close. I haven’t seen reports like that. iOS 16 was poor for older devices, too, but nowhere near 32-bit iOS versions.

iOS 19 will be the worst. 😉

"[A]lmost unusable" ? I mean, really? Come on; talk about exaggeration. I have no issues with my 16 Pro Max, 15 Pro Max and 14 Pro on iOS 18. The only issue has been iCloud Mail Push that was introduced with iOS 18.3.2. Everything else is flawless. No crashing, no stuttering. I'm on my phone for 10+ hours a day. Battery is absolutely rock solid.

I don’t get your comment. The OP is talking about iOS on an iPhone. Not iPadOS on an iPad. I know iPadOS is a branch of iOS, but it’s its own thing these days, especially.

That's iOS 11 hands down causing Apple to have to apologize for slow devices and make iOS 12 an optimization release.

iOS 18 runs quite smoothly though it does seem to be buggy randomly in some cases.

The differences between the two are so minimal even today that any serious distinction is purely theoretical, and really amounts to nothing more than mere product differentiation by Apple.

I never had any major problems with iOS 11 (I wish they'd bring back the control centre/app switcher combo back!).

iOS 18 on my 3rd gen SE has been completely fine. iPadOS 18 on my M4 iPad Pro on the other hand, has been very buggy. Maybe more buggy than any previous release.

I’ve noticed that for a few years now the latest devices will seem just slightly less then optimized for awhile like apple has to fine tune them or something. Where as older ones will be seemingly happy as ever on the latest iOS.

For iOS 18, hard disagree. Older devices had excess heat and battery drain issues for months that the 16-series never had. It's gotten better, but it was rough for a few months.

Oh so that’s why this 16e has notably better battery life then my 15 pro max did lol

What do you mean by control centre/app switcher? The CC we have now is almost the same as 11 but with more customization.

According to Tim Cook supporters, it doesn't matter if iOS 18 is very buggy because what makes software good is if Apple is making enormous profits.
