Yesterday I turned on my MAC and instead of the regular startup, it showed this grey/blue screen with the icon of a 'folder' flashing in it. Inside the folder was a question mark sign (?).

I tried reinstalling the software, only to discover the system was not detecting any hard disks to install it on.

I've recently married and have among other things, my wedding pictures in there. How deep in trouble am I? Is my MAC dead (if so, I will join her soon in heaven, because my wife's going to get me).

This is indicative of a possible HD or Logic Board issue.

Did you hear the HD spin up? Was there a clicking sound?

What kind of Mac do you have?

At this time, I would suggest not doing anything with that Mac until options are presented.

Above all, remain calm as a solution is found.

if your hd is dead, buy DATA RESCUE 2 that will recover your important pictures.

if you replace your hd, install SmartReporter. This will notify you in ample time to back up your files if your HD is going to crash.
