Just got this atv yesterday only for the mirroring, only it's on 4.3 and says its up to date when I know it's not. Then I read the update has been pulled, is there anyway to update or should I just take this thing back and get my refund

Apple pulled 4.4, but released 4.41 last night. Your AppleTV should be able to find the update sometime today.

Is there going to be mirror for the iPhone 4? Or just the iPad and iPhone 4S?

Looks like just the 4s and iPad2.

I can understand the iPad2 over the iPad, but I really can't see dissing the iPhone4. As far I am aware, the iPhone 4's hardware is up to the task.

They're losing a sale out of a bunch of people I know, myself included, who might consider the ATV but aren't looking to upgrade their phones until the 5 is released.

Yeah, I've been wanting an app store on the ATV2 for a while now to play games using the iPhone as a controller. Mirroring to me would be a close second option. Too bad they are limiting it without an explanation.

If you look closely you'll notice the iPad 2 is capable of airplaying while also running the iPad screen simultaneously, while the iPhone 4 is not capable of this. The A4 isn't even able to handle 1080p out let alone 720p out plus 960x640 on the screen. Pretty sure its a limit of the A4 processor.

I'm not sure the iPhone 4's hardware is up to it. The iPhone 4 has the same CPU and graphics chip as the original iPad, but underclocked -- it only has to mirror 960 x 640 instead of 1024 x 768 pixels but that's not a huge difference; it does have twice as much RAM but I don't think RAM's the issue here. The issue is compressing the screen into an H.264 stream in realtime. The iPad 2 can barely do it so I wouldn't be surprised if neither the iPhone 4 nor the iPad were up to it.

    Good point (both).

I tend to forget that the 4 is actually a touch slower than the iPad v1. In use the phone feels faster, but that's almost certainly the RAM, not the CPU.

Hopefully Apple wont push the iPad3 all the way out into the middle of next year, as that'll at least given me a reason to update the ATV before summer, when I'm seldom in the house anyway.

I bet it can be done with the A4, with a jail broken iPad1 you could screen mirror using the HDMI output cable which Apple said could only be done on the iPad2. No real reason why it can't also do it using Air Mirroring.

    Figured it out

I synced my atv up through iTunes directly via USB, then restored it. When it restored it it also updated to 4.4.1. Now video mirroring works both with my 4S & ipad2

It's possible, but AirPlay Mirroring is entirely different from wired Mirroring so I wouldn't draw too much from that example. I agree that there's no reason why the A4 shouldn't do some form of AirPlay mirroring, but whether it can do it well enough to be useful is another question.
